SUMaC or WTP

Hello! This spring I was accepted into the 2012 session for both SUMaC and WTP. Any advice on which program I should choose?

First off, congratulations on two great acceptances. You can’t go wrong with either. I know a lot of girls who did WTP who are at MIT right now, but that may be correlation not causality, but WTP is definitely focused on exploring your interests and being exposed to new fields, rather than really improving in math like SUMaC is. My friend loved her time at WTP, so I am a bit biased for it. But again, both programs are great and it really depends if you want to improve your math skills or expose yourself to something “new” as WTP is supposed to be your first experience with engineering and computer science.

I’m not sure about SUMaC, but I did WTP (ME) and had an amazing time. The classes were a bit easy at first, since I had already covered physics and calculus, but they definitely got harder later on. The projects and labs were challenging as well. WTP taught me how MIT classes work, and how interestingly normally boring subjects can be taught
Most importantly, I am still REALLY good friends with the people I met there. In fact, I met 5 of my fellow WTP/ME friends at CPW yesterday and also saw ~20 of the EECS girls that had been accepted. I am pretty sure that the recommendation letter that I received from WTP had a positive impact on my application and eventual admission into MIT.

tl;dr: I loved, loved, loved WTP and would do it over any time! It’s what convinced me to commit to MIT this year after being accepted.

And to balance nocturnalduck’s post, I’ll give a little spheel about SUMaC.

I, too had an amazing time. Unless you’re already well-versed in abstract algebra (Program I) or Algebraic Topology (Program II) the classes will be pretty difficult for you. I think everyone felt challenged.
I am also really good friends with everyone from SUMaC, and I’m actually attending Stanford with about 10 of them. SUMaC also gives recommendation letters which probably helped with the admissions process as well.

Honestly, I’m pretty sure SUMaC and WTP will both be great experiences. I would choose based on whether you want to deeply explore Math or go into engineering and comp sci. And… I guess it might lead to your college choice seeing how I’m going to Stanford and nocturnalduck is going to MIT haha.

I think I’m going to go with WTP. Thanks for all of the insightful reflections–they were really helpful in making this choice

Awesome! Message me if you have any questions :)

I’ve heard a lot about WTP. It’s supposed to be amazing. I know someone who has gone to SUMaC, and it is a good program, but WTP sounds much more exciting.
