Summer Bridge and general questions

My Math5 class starts this July 27th and I'mhaving trouble preparing ahead.

How do I know the right book to buy?

Where did you guys bought most of your text books? Amazon.com?

I'm planning to take my car to UCR for the summer classes, so I'd be needing the gold parking permit right? How do I pay for it?

Is laptop necessary if you're a freshman?

I signed up for work study. Does UCR automatically setup send you a schedule that fits or you have to make your own?

i recommend getting used books because its cheaper. You can get them off amazon, half, etc.

Laptop isnt a necessity but very useful to have and it actually depends on your major. I suggest getting atleast a netbook.

your professor will provide a syllabus with required textbooks

online is good, the campus also has a book exchange

you’d have to go to an admin building about that, I’m not sure

not really, although personally, I’d die without one

no idea

Your professor will have a syllabus that lists the books you need for the class. Even if it is posted online before instruction starts, I recommend that you go to the first day of class because they may make some last minute changes.

Online is great and a lot cheaper. Like Whiteclock mentioned, there is the University Book Exchange on campus that also has books for a lot cheaper.

The Student Gold permits are usually for individual quarters or all quarters of the academic year. I’m not sure if there is a special summer permit required. You might want to ask the Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) office.

Not absolutely necessary; people do get by without one. But it is more convenient to have your own. I never take notes on my laptop during lecture because I prefer handwriting notes. But, I use my laptop for research, typing papers, etc.

I’m not sure, though I’m more inclined to say that you have to build your own work schedule. They’ll make sure it won’t conflict with your classes. I don’t think that they’ll make you work during ALL the time you don’t have classes. I believe you can work for up to about 19 hours a week under the work-study program.

You’ll have time to buy it after you get here. Its a book and online site combo. (you do the hw online) you can get both at the bookstore, or buy a used book and the online site passkey from the bookstore/site.

some form bookstore, most from friends - it pays to know ppl and facebook is useful too! in fact, i may know a few people who took that class and would love to sell you the book. let me kno!

For summer you buy a housing pass for lothian’s parking lot. its $50, cash only. the TAPs ppl will be there on the day of move-in and they’ll sell it to you. Back when i moved in, i luckily had $50 in cash with me, otherwise theres boa atm on campus and a boa branch 3 mins away.

YES. ok its not necessary but you’ll be glad you got one. and as mentioned above, get a netbook if money is an issue, overall a laptop is an awesome investment for your 4 years and beyond

You gotta do the work buddy! This is college remember  hahah the career center’s site (scottlink)has listings of workstudy jobs that are offered on campus. you dont have to work your first quarter, but its better that you do so that you earn the full amount that finaid awarded you. be resourceful… back when i did summer bridge, i walked into one of the offices here and asked for the position in person! got the job and was working right off the bat of my first year! my coworkers did the whole online thingie with the scottlink n most firstyear students dont start working till 2nd quarter… probably because they dont know how to find a job. (n they end up working for dinning, like almost all of them)

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
oh wait! dont forget to bring a fan! even a small one. summer session two, thats when summer bridge takes place, its the hottest part of summer… and westlo isnt the best place to be.

is the heat comparable to say…

80-90 degrees plus like 1000000 % percent humidity

I went through that kinda stuff back in some other colleges during summer school, it wasn’t too bad (everyone took like 30 min cold showers though haha)

Riverside is supposed to be 100+ at times, but dry, no humid

its not that humid, but it gets HOT… this Saturday it was 110F and i was dying in my car… too cheap to turn on the AC loll, luckily moval mall isnt too far. I had all my summer bridge classes in the morning and was done by 12 everyday. summer classes is another story, plus this year im working and taking classes till 4pm n ride my longboard to sterling… effin HOT!! most ppl are home over the summer so its all good for them hah

btw, during the year, rside is not that bad. most ppl who talk smack abt the heat are from norcal where they are use to cooler temps.

well inland norcal is what I described above, but I guess for coastal areas lol

reminds me of when two girls came to NY during summer, one from Guam, the other from Alaska

one sweated like crazy and the other one was shivering even with jackets…

I heard a counselor say that it’s not as bad during the year since it won’t be summer time

“one sweated like crazy and the other one was shivering even with jackets…”
lmao!!! hahaha good one

yeah it isnt so bad, summer kind of lags around till oct/novish so its warm for a while here. but when its cold, its cold here! dessert after all, so esp at night it gets cold! my homies from SF would walk around in their shorts while id be covered up in a fatass jacket…

lol

I’d just stay inside :V

Is it always hot during the day?
Around what months is it actually cool during the day?
Cuz i’m already dying in San Diego weather :S

The more intense heat during the day usually lasts from May-ish to November-ish. It might rain from December-February. In the late winter to early spring, the temperatures are in the 70s, so it’s nice.

Thank god…

I’d rather it was 60 in the winter…

70 isn’t that cold

“most intense” goes to july and aug. second session of summer is the hottest, which begins next week… yey… rest of the summer season may-nov its “hot” but right now its hella HOT! the nice sweat art on the back of my shirts from my walk home after work/class proves it! yes art… LOL

good news for all you incoming peeps is that you’ll be home during the summer sessions, enjoying moms home cooked meals and not having to to do your own laundry hahah! if youre crazy like me then you stick around every summer…

god damn it
you’re making me so depressed

abt the home cooked meals and stuff? hahahhah
imagine how i felt when i moved off campus and no longer had food made for me by dinning… i had to learn to cook!! slowly moved on from rice and hotdog n topramen to fried rice and stir-fry beef n veggies and ohhh summer grilling baby!

ps, get flex max, its the best. i eat at the barn religiously during the year haha.

where is the barn at?

The Barn is behind Humanities and Watkins Hall. Long line and wait during the start of the usual lunch hours (11:00, 12:00, 1:00, etc.), but it chills out after that.
