Does it really matter what you get in a summer course as a visiting student? Your GPA will not be affected but for someone who wants to go to med school, grad school, etc, is there really much difference between getting an A or a C? This is besides getting the grade you need in order for the class to transfer to your home school.

Why wouldn’t it matter? It might not be calculated into your GPA at your undergraduate institution but when you apply to medical schools they calculate it all in your GPA regardless of where you took the class and when you took the class.

When my D took summer classes at a different school, the grades showed up on her home institution transcript even though they were not included in the GPA calculation.

Medical schools require that you submit all transcripts from any college you have ever taken a class at.

Most graduate and medical programs require all transcripts, so even if the grades do not affect your main college’s GPA calculation, they will see if you received a C versus an A. You do not want it to look like you slacked off over the summer and maintained a just-passing grade so it would transfer.

Some grad/med schools will recalculate your GPA to include the transfer courses. And if you try to “forget” to submit those transcripts, there are databases these schools can check to see if you attended any other institutions (especially if it shows transfer credits on your transcripts but they see that you did not include those transcripts in your application). Treat transfer courses as seriously as any other course.
