Summer Classes

Helllllo everyone. I applied for UCLA for regular freshman but didn't get in, and now I'm going to NYU. My mom is forcing me to take summer classes, so I decided I was gonna go with my top choice UCLA to at least get to know what it feels like going to classes in a school with traditional campus haha. And I'm taking Lifescience1 and Political Science 1.

Can anyone tell me what summer classes at ucla is like? People have told me it's nothing like the regular school year, but I would still like to know what it's like.

Thanks!!

Congrats on NYU, i love new york.

But anyways, summer classes are a lot shorter. Much faster pace than regular school year (hard to imagine). Workload in terms of tests and papers are usually reduced a tiny bit (like one less paper).

And not sure if you did yet, but you should make sure those courses transfer to NYU. You don't think you want to waste money for nothing.

Thanks, I'm really excited about living in the city too =).

What about the social life there? Is it anything like the regular school year? Is it easy to go to parties and meet people? I heard there are a lotta high school peeps roaming around campus. Also would it be possible to find any part time job on campus(like at the book store or some office) for six weeks? I think I'm gonna need some extra cash living in NYC next year haha.

If I'm taking Lifescience 1 and Political Science 1, is it gonna be pretty damn intense?

Hey, is it too late to sign up for the summer courses? Is there housing providing for out of state people? I live in NJ, and housing information on their site is not working(go figures!), so I'm not sure. Are there any good courses regarding pharmacy, medicine, the like? If yes or no, what are some reccommended courses to take? When is the deadline to sign up?

Oh, and I am currently a High school junior.

^You can enroll through first week of each session. There are on-campus housing available, if the website's not working I'd try to call the housing office to figure out what's going on.

check out courses here---> Schedule of Classes Home Page

social life is nothing compare to a regular school year. There are probably small house parties in westwood village but frats should all be on break. There are a lot of high school kids roaming around because ucla hosts a number of different camps (cheerleading, band, football etc.). Part-time on-campus Summer job should be available through ASUCLA, they accommodate to your schedule.

damn so there is basically nothing going on in campus?

Also, I'm thinking about doing the 4 week course(or was it 6 weeks) and I'm so confused. How do I pick the courses, for example, how many do I pick, and how do I know if they will conflict with each other:?

Hey taiwanseseterror, where do you go to check how much the tuition is? I picked lifescience 1 and enconomics 2. Im from NJ so I have to get housing, which is 2,000 dollars already, but I have no idea how to check how much is it for tuition. How much was it for you?

Tuition is on a per unit basis, as follows in the link below:

FAQ-What are the Summer Sessions fees for 2008? fees

I looked at that, but it's wording is a bit confusing. Basically it means each course is 222 dollars? Do I fall under the visiting student?

edit: Alright, I figured it out a bit. I see where the courses say how many units it is, but now I have another question. Im taking economics and life science 1. For economics, it says it is not a GE course, and is 4 units. For life science, it says it is a GE course, and is 0.0 units. First off, what the heck is a GE course? And why is life science 0.0 units?

make sure you're looking at the life science LECTURE, not the discussion. should be 5 units.

I'm pretty sure most frats have a large # of people living in over the summer and, if not, they sublet rooms out. I was told that the summer is one of the best times for social activities because of reduced workload + warm weather + nothing else to do?? If you're 21 there's also the bars...

Also I had a question....how come if I'm taking 16 units (8A and 8C) and am living off campus I have an estimated cost of $7,000? Shouldn't it be closer to $3,000?? Anyone know how this works? Thanks.
