First off, I am a returning student taking summer classes. I signed up for summer housing in the event that I did not find an apartment. I did find an apartment and signed the lease. I tried to cancel my summer housing contract, but was unsuccessful. I was stupid and did not read the very, very bottom of the summer housing page that said that contracts cannot be canceled. I'm not going to go into detail about how ridiculous of a policy this is, but needless to say, I had to shorten my lease at a comfortable place so that I can live in mediocre housing that I do not even want.

Anyway! I got assigned to a townhouse in McCollum Hall. Does anyone know if there is a chance of getting a reassignment or am I stuck with my current assignment? If not, does anyone have any good things to say about this assignment to allay my concerns, haha? I'm taking Calc II and Chem I during Summer A so I am stressed as it is, but this has added a great deal to it.

Housing hasn’t really ever made it easy for you to get out of a contract. Returning residents have had some ways of getting out of a fall/spring contract, but I’ve never heard the same about the summer contract.

McCollum is fine. I’m a bit confused as to why they decided to suddenly open it for summer after it not being a summer dorm for a number of years, but it’s not like you’re getting the worst dorm on campus. The bedrooms aren’t singles, that’s one of the bigger downsides. The desks can be moved from the upstairs common room into your bedroom with plenty of space remaining. I did that the first year I lived there, and then the second year it just so happened that I was basically given the bed with the desk already in the room.

I loved when I lived in McCollum. I was going to live there this year as well (so for 3 years total), up until I couldn’t afford it.

Housing is ridiculous about contracts.
Summer never fills up and I don’t understand why they would care if people opted out of summer housing.
Did you choose to be in McCollum bc I doubt traditions is anywhere near filled for Summer. They’ll probably give you the runaround and you’ll have to talk to several people to get an answer that will be of some help in the housing office bc sometimes you get students working there who think they are the authority of knowing what’s going on when in reality they are clueless so talk to a higher up but even then they are just as clueless at times. So all I can say is…good luck.
I’m sure McCollum isn’t bad but I just always hear people complain about roaches there.

Honestly, I can only see it as a money-making scheme and a pretty obvious one, if so. They probably know that very few people take summer classes and want to get money from whomever they can.

My first choice was the efficiency apartment in McCollum; Traditions was my second choice. I never specified that I wanted a townhouse, so I’m not sure how that came to be.

I’m going to give them a call to see if I can get a change, couldn’t hurt I suppose. Thanks, you two.

Side note: I was able to cancel my housing contract for the fall term with no problems. I simply chose the option “moving off-campus” or something to that effect.

With the closure of Ragans and Rogers (555 and 188 spots) and only the opening of McCollum (199) along with keeping Traditions (276) for current residents for summer, Housing is losing over 500 spots for on-campus residents this summer. While I doubt that Traditions is full, it wouldn’t surprise me to find that it’s pretty close to full. There’s fewer options this summer, and there’s a number of people that are likely staying on campus.

My bad Robbeh, I forgot that you had a short while (last year, I believe it was around a week to 10 days) to cancel any returner Fall/Spring contracts without any problems. Since I didn’t have to deal with Fall/Spring Housing for 2013-14, I completely forgot that part of the contract.

With McCollum, there’s only something like 20 efficiency apartments in the building. It’s possible they aren’t opening them for the summer or that they are full or something (I honestly haven’t been paying attention to Housing lately to see what they are opening in McCollum), although I can’t be sure. If you didn’t get into Traditions, it’s quite possible that it filled up for Summer. I would be surprised, but I suppose stranger things have happened.

I will say though that, hopefully, the renovations that Rogers is supposedly undergoing this summer (that’s why it’s closing, I believe) will hopefully be worth the drastic rent increase next year. Hopefully it isn’t just a new coat of paint or some carpeting or something idiotic like that. They’ve tried to hype up the closing of Rogers a bit (I think I’m up to about 5 emails now about it and the changes) so it better be worth the 20% rent increase.

As far as I know they will be putting carpet in Rogers. I wonder if they’ll do something about the showers, study area, and cabinets.
The room I was in had rusty cabinets and mold on the sides. Also the “widows” are just sad.

I know someone who signed up for housing not long ago for summer and they got into traditions. So I’m curious of they have rooms left even housing people don’t know half the time. I remember we asked last summer about fall capacity and some said it was full while others said there was still plenty of room. My ex-roommate did a late change to her housing app and ended up getting into traditions for fall. So who knows you just have to chance it and request a change and see if it works out.

With Housing, a lot of it seems to be luck in who you get. There’s been a few times where I’ve been lucky to know who to talk to, which is really helpful.

For example, last year when I found out that I pretty much had to live in Rogers to afford this year. The student working the info desk in Housing pretty much had no clue what was going on (saying there was a waiting list for Rogers). However, when I contacted the Housing staff via email, I was able to get into contact with the person that oversaw Rogers assignments, and was able to communicate with someone that knew the situation pretty well. I eventually got my room change finalized (it took 3 months though because of how absolutely slow Housing is when it comes to breaking any contracts), and everything worked out, but dang. So much hassle could have been avoided by the people working the front desk in the Housing office simply saying “yeah, I’m not sure about that” instead of making up crap.

If they put in carpeting, that might be the most useless “renovation” that could be done. Don’t get me wrong, the flooring now is pretty bleh, but the carpeting in the rooms in McCollum isn’t much better.

I know that since they have to do the work in about 3 1/2 months, it can’t be too big of a project. I figure at best it’s changing out the cabinets, maybe new sinks, and possibly new carpeting/blinds. They have I believe ~90 apartments to renovate, so they would have to be able to do the work on average in 1 day per apartment. If they were closing down for a year (like will be done with Deviney and Dorman next year), then I could see it being a major overhaul.

I know that it’s been a while since Rogers got an overhaul. I want to say that the last one was in either 2002 or 2003, but I could be wrong (it might have been longer).

But at least now it makes sense why they’re closing Rogers for the Summer and opening McCollum- they’re doing some work to Rogers, and McCollum is the closest in size to Rogers.

Oh, I lived there this year. I’m expecting that I’ll live there again next year (I got accepted to grad school here, and plan on attending), but that’s not quite set in stone. But my current roommate should be returning as well, and at the very least I’ll try to get him to tell me what changes were made (if I’m not living here).

Hi, everyone. I was reassigned to Traditions with seemingly no problems at all. I’m not sure how many floors Traditions has, but my room is on the third floor, so it’s possible that the hall is almost full.

Housing doesn’t necessarily go from bottom to top or top to bottom when doing assignments, from what I’ve seen, although I would be very surprised if they filled up Traditions at their asking rate. I know it’s on par with what their asking rate for Fall/Spring this year was (on a per week rate) but it’s hard to fathom that they want almost $900 a month…

But glad to hear that you got into the building, Robbeh. I don’t know if you’ve been there, but it’s very nice (if not a tiny bit small).
