Has anyone heard from Cap21's summer program yet? I know Michigan letters are supposed to come out this week... I am probably going to send Cap21 a tape if I don't get into UMich. The only factor of me not attending Cap21 would be cost...hopefully I could get a scholarship somewhere.

I got into MPulse! I am soooo thrilled. My friend got in, as well....with a scholarship! So happy for him.

This summer is going to be amazing.

-Nick

Great news Nick! Congrats! Hope you'll enjoy your summer!

Nick:

Congratulations! I have heard, verbally, that my S is in also. I have not seen a written confirmation. If he's in, let's get you together before the workshop. Is your friend mail or female? Thanks. Again, congratulations.

vocaldad

My friend is a male. He said Dody Blackstone called him and told him about the scholarship...but she would not confirm his admittance. Interesting. But she said a written confirmation would come in the mail soon.

I am just thrilled. The same day I auditioned for UMich, my friend Ashley called and said she got her acceptance letter to CCM....it was a a very good day!

I am from Kentucky, but judging from the reputation and recognition of the program, I doubt I'll be the only Southerner.

-Nick

I recieved my letter to MPulse this afternoon - I GOT IN, TOO!! I am absolutely enthralled! I was on the phone all afternoon calling friends who have been waiting to hear about my admittance - they've been so supportive!
NICK - Congrats to you and your friend! I agree, this summer is going to be amazing... I'm SOOO excited!

Congrats to all those who will be going to MPulse. My daughter also sent in an audition tape and she is still waiting (anxiously) to hear. We live in Ca.

My daughter(age 16, currently a jr in hs) recently was accepted to two summer programs and she needs to make up her mind asap. The first one is at Interlochen. It is a new program called musical theater workshop. It is for 3 wks and culminates in a showcase as opposed to a full blown production.
The other one is at NYU through the Steinhardt School of Music. It is also a musical theater workshop. It is under the direction of Wm Wesbrooks (who sounds very nice) and also culminates in a showcase. Both programs take about 30 to 35 kids. There are certainly pros and cons with each one. If anyone has experience with these programs/places or thoughts on the subject, I would love and appreciate your imput. Interlochen will only hold the space until Monday. Thank you....signed, perplexed

CTParent:

Are you from Connecticut (CT??)? Traverse City is an awful long place to go for 3 weeks. My daughter went to Interlochen last year for 8 weeks and the year before for 4 weeks. We are from NY, and drove our daughter out both years and she flew back herself. You can fly from Westchestester airport to Detroit to Traverse City. The car ride is about 16 hours (more with traffic).

Interlochen is a wonderful, wonderful place, but it is undergoing changes. It is hard to know if they are for the better or the worse.

It is hard to comment on what you should do. The 3 week workshop for HS is a variation on the 4 week program she did 2 years ago as an intermediate. The 4-week variation allowed for wonderful electives that the 3-week version does not allow for.

Does your daughter prefer a camp setting, such as Interlochen (live in cabins by 2 lakes, cool nights) or a city dorm kind of setting? One great thing about Interlochen is also the arts festival that goes on many a night... many famous performers, and/or performances by campers.

My daughter chose not to apply to Interlochen this summer because of some of the changes (notably no electives). But she has friends who are going back, some in MT, others in instrumental programs.

Maybe there is no wrong decision for you.

Thank you for your response. I am kind of leaning toward the Steinhardt School (NYU) program due to distance, that fact that she would be arriving at interlochen one day late (We get back from vacation the day it officially begins, and the "uniform..knickers?! Having been a pianist in my youth and being from Chgo, I was always a bit enthralled w/ Interlochen, but perhaps this is not the right opportunity. I wonder if anyone has done the Steinhardt musical theater workshop. Haven't seen much about that on these pages.
Where is your daughter headed this summer? Does she know yet?

My daugther (known on this forum as broadwaywannabe) is going to Carnegie Mellon pre-college.

By the way, she will miss the knickers and blue socks of Interlochen. After a bit, the uniform becomes part of the loving tradition.

And you should know that just today at an audition for a local production, the director commented about Interlochen on her resume.

Wow-you're making this tough! That's great about your daughter. I am sure that she will love CM. Do you think that the 3 wk workshop at Interlochen will carry any weight or be impressive as opposed to the 6 wk? Not that this is the basis for the decision but it just kind of got me thinking...also would it sound incredibly pushy and obnoxious if I asked them if there was still a chance she could be considered for the production (6 week) program if it is not entirely full. I don't want to be Teri Shields. Thanks for your responses by the way. They are really helpful. I am quickly becoming obsessed with this site.

I have feeling you will be here for at least the next twelve months! Many of us on this forum were where you are now and here we are now having been through the gamut of this process. I started reading here, barely posting, when my D was just a freshman, but not seriously thinking about any of it. I was only checking it out because I was reading the rest of College Confidential as I had a daughter who was a junior in high school and we were embarking on HER college process. But knowing that I had another child who some day was going to want to look at colleges for musical theater, I kept reading this forum too, keeping that in the back of my mind, but I could only deal with one child's college process at a time and it was early for the younger daughter anyway. I did not know at the time, however, that she was going to want to graduate high school a year early. So, while I mostly kept reading here and trying to learn more about this area, I had to jump in full throttle a year ago in tenth grade when she opted to apply this year for college BFA programs. So, now I have gone through the whole deal. I am so grateful to the other parents/students on this forum who had gone through it all a year or two ahead of us as we learned a lot from them. And so I stay, along with other CC parents of this year's crop, to support and share with the next group!
Susan
(PS, congrats on the summer options)

Hi Nick!
Congratulations on your acceptance into MPulse. I just got my letter this afternoon and I am so excited to be joining you this summer in Michigan! I am a southerner as well, Texan actually. I know this may sound like a silly question, but are there uniform requirements?

(The thought of blue and maize knickers doesn't thrill me.) haha

Hi also to "nick's friend" and Kate!

~Meredith

CTParent: Very unlikely that you will find an opening in the six-week option. That is why, presumably, they put your daughter in the 3 week. Interlochen found that MT was one of their expanding areas, and in previous years had the kids they couldn't fit into the 8-week (now 6-week) MT option do "general studies." My daughter loved general studies, as it turned out, because she got to do ballet, chorus, voice lessons, operetta (i.e. electives).

This year, they eliminated general studies (and incidentally the operetta entirely), and added the 3-week MT programs to fill the gap. I'm not sure that is good or bad.

The camp is a wonderful place. There is no doubt about it. My daughter met kids from all over the world and the US. Her cabin had girls who were passionate about dance, their instrument, as well as MT.

My bet is your daughter will not go wrong at either Interlochen or NYU.

Isn't it nice to have 2 no-lose options? Even though it is hard sometimes to make a decision, wow, it is better than the alternative!

Thanks for your imput. It is really helpful and you sound extremely knowledgable. Do you know anyone who has attended the NYU program? As I mentioned earlier, it is called Summer on Broadway. It is a 3 wk workshop headed up by Wm Wesbrooks, Assoc. Professor at the Steinhardt School. I have not read anything about this program on these pages and it's a little puzzling. Oh well, if anyone is knows anything about this one, I'd love the feedback. Sounds like there are some gr eat options out there for everyone.

Thanks to SusieinVT. I am definitely going to be addicted to this site for quite a while. I think the concept and creation of this site is such a valuble, no-nonsense tool for all of us that I feel like those parents out there who don't know about this (or utilize this) are missing the boat.

CTParent,

I'm not sure, but I think the Steinhardt summer program may be new this year. I've been on this board for over two years, started just before my D (now finishing her freshman year at UM) went to CMU for pre-college, and I don't think anyone has mentioned this program before - and someone on this board knows SOMETHING about EVERYTHING!! My D auditioned for and was accepted to Steinhardt (for the BM in Music/MT concentration) and we thought it a very strong program. William Wesbrooks wrote to my D after her audition and we, as a family, spent a lovely Sunday morning with him at his office at Steinhardt, discussing the program and the opportunities there. He is actually in charge of the MT department. He's a great guy and I'm sure he will run a quality summer program. Hope this helps!

wow-your daughter must be quite amazing. I hope that she is enjoying UM. That is supposed to be a wonderful program.I visited there (during my own college search in the Dark Ages) and it was a beautiful campus. Thanks for the info about Wesbrooks. I had the same impression of him just by having phone contact. I think that this might be a nice option for my daughter.

CTParent (and all):

My S was accepted to the NYU-Steinhardt summer MT workshop and the UMich MT summer workshop and will be attending both (they are back to back, no rest for him or us). I have tried to get info on this board about the NYU-Steinhardt summer MT program and have not been succesful. I CAN say that this is not its first year (I know it existed last year, not sure beyond that). After this summer, I'll post about both (my S has attended UMich before, and I have posted info on that program already) and try to compare/contrast.

CTParent: Congrats to your D. If she chooses the NYU-Steinhardt summer MT program, let me know and perhaps we can share info before it starts.

Also, I would love to trade info with those attending the UMich MT summer workshop and any others who will attend the NYU-Steinhardt summer MT program.

Best to all.
