Summer Science Program SSP Introduction Thread

shadowdancer - you now have the award for the most put action here's. Congrats :)

Favorite composers: Tchaikovsky. Russian people.
Favorite ice cream flavor: Orange shebert. I think. I don't eat much icecream.

Favorite book?

I have way too many. But what stands out from the rest is The Fountainhead.

Favorite COMPOSER: Rachmaninoff

Favorite MUSIC: what kind of question is that? Classical music is the only real music

Flight: Philly to Cincinnati to Albuturkey

thanks, shadow :) actually, there IS a reason why i use these smileys so often. I usually smile non-stop from morning to night...so people think i am crazy....:)....actually, i am...a lot! muaaahahaha! :)

thank you, too. I am flattered :p

1) i am in love with astronomy, and i'm majoring in astrophysics no matter what :)
2) my first choice is Caltech, though i'm 10000% sure that my chances of going there are ~(-10001%)
3) School eneded for me on Sep 7th, 2005, but officially it ends on June, 28th in New York, i think
4) Favorite sport: sleeping...i think, without boasting, i am one of the best at it in the world blush
Also, i enjoy volleyball, baseball, and drawning (eer..i mean, swimming :) )
5) Like to watch basketball and baseball...favorite baseball team: NY Mets (because they suck), favorite basketball team: Dwyane Wade :)
6)Favorite color: Black. Then goes combo of blue and orange, then light blue and red, then light blue and white, and....etc, etc :)
7) Favorite music: w/e they are playing on the radio, "oldies"
8) I am not sure who is my favorite composer, but i can definitely say that now my least favorite composer is Mussorgsky (i'm not sure how you spell him in English). The reason for it is his work called 'A Night on Bald Mountain', and its flute part is killing me :)
9) Favorite movies....i guess "A Beautiful Mind", and "Titanic"....these are the only two movies that made me cry. :)
10) Ice Cream flavor: all ice cream, except for caramel flavor...brrr (shivers)
11) Favorite book: too many of them, but definitely none of my textbooks :)
12) Flying to ABQ from LGA, NY, through something in Texas...and i'm really scared: i have NO idea how airports work, what do i have to do, whom do i have to talk to, where do i carry my stuff, where do i leave it, etc, etc. omg! :)
13) (blank) 13 is just my favorite number
(also, my favorite day is Friday, but not b/c of Friday, 13th. It's just the last day of school, that's why) :) (Yours?)
14) Poignantpianist, you told us almost nothing about yourself...we are waiting :p
15) Today, we were discussing The Color with a couple of friends (on your note that you don't want to hear that white is not a color, shadowdancer)....what are your thoughts on that? :)

EDIT: Sorry, poignantpianist, didn't see your last post....you can cross #14..unless you want to add something else? ;)

I just realized I didn't answer my own questions, haha.
So here goes.

2)Team/Player --- THE LA LAKERS & KOBE BRYANT :P

8) Number -- any prime number. 7 & 13 are my numbers...but 8 (kobe's number lol) is slowly creeping in therr.

9)Day of the week -- Thursday. Dunno, i just like Thurrrsdayssssss.
Just some extra stuff.

--favorite artist/musician

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....about a month left, y`all.....

Oi! Hriundeli, we need watch Titanic at SSP on sundays and sob like mad people....T_T I always do w/Titanic haha....sniff. yay for sobbing like mad people!

Busy...gotta finish this proposal (although I can't resist posting on CC).

My flight is flippin **** as hell. From Detroit, to Minneapolis, to ABQ. Flight plans should be closing in on the final destination...not going North...then South...do'h!

Please...no Titanic. I've got some controversial Asian thrillers (English subtitles!) if ya'll wanna watch.

^ What Asian thrillers? Japanese/Korean ghost films? haha we have plenty of that in Taiwan.

OK anyways I think Cipher and I are STILL the only people going to Ojai. Hahaha.

I'll do one of the surveys on the top since I have plenty of time now to procrastinate before I start on a 5-page paper =p

1)Color -- Pastel shades of colors. Basically anything that's light (and really light).

2)Team/Player -- LOL don't watch American NBA/Sports.

3)Favorite Music -- I listen to basically anything in the States. I don't like hard rock and heavy metal though. Mainly I just turn on the American radio here in Taiwan and listen to whatever's on. Jack Johnson is really nice though, I just discovered him recently.

4)Movies -- Again, I watch basically anything. (hahaha I really have no favorites!) No chick flicks. Ugh. Some of the best films I can think off the top of my head: Bourne Identity, La Vita e Bella (Italian film that has a REALLY touching message), Forrest Gump, Casablanca, Batman Begins, Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies...one of Miyasaki (Japanese cartoon artist)'s works, really touching), Prince of Egypt (I watched it in 4 languages).

5)Favorite Composers--- Liszt and Chopin all the way. I marvel at the piano genius of Liszt on some of his compositions. He remains one of my most admired composers because 1) his piano music often takes some time to decipher and get right, but 2) when you can play it right, it sounds incredibly impressive. Chopin is just fun to play and his compositions sound nice.

6) Favorite ice cream flavor--- Strawberry! I don't know why, but I've been so addicted since when I was a child. Mango and Pineapple come next (not the American kind though, it's often far too sweet).

7) Favorite Book --- The Alchemist (Paul Coelho)

8) Number -- 17.

9)Day of the week -- Wednesday. It's so nice to think that you're more than halfway through the week at the conclusion of school on Wednesdays...haha.

i have played liszt hungarian rhapsody no. 6 and 7

Yeah. I guess it's just me and Oasis. The other people are probably just robots.

Go So Co Rr Ow

Lies. All lies.

2.5 hours left till one month till SSP (hope that made any sense)......:)

So............

Space Is The Final Frontier?

so lets come up with some sort of creative way to remember how to spell soccoro or socorro or however its spelled

The first time I saw Titatanic, it was at this birthday party when I was like... 8 years old. I was terrified of water and swimming pools and boats and canoes for monthes and I haven't watched it since.

I think Grave of the Fireflies is the only war movie I have ever liked... and it brings me to tears every time I watch it. Bourne Identity is a good one too.

I have so many books I like... I geuss my favorite it authors are Robin McKinley and Orson Scott Card. I have to read the Alchemist next year in french in French class.

Russian composers/ Russian people in general rock! (Btw I'm half Russian...)

Theres this ballet called Les Sylphides and its all Chopin music and its really pretty and I was in it two years ago, so I like Chopin too. Oh and my other favorite composer other than Tchakovsky is probably Morlacchi, because he wrote this piece called Il Pastore Svizzero (The Swiss Sheperd) for flute and its really hard, but its sooo much fun to play fast and I won a competition with it grins

2 hours and 20 minutes until 1 month until SSP grins

socorro

zorro

easy to remember?

The Pianist and A Beautiful Mind are the best films of all time

grins fantastique
zorrosocorrozorrosocorrozorrosocorro

I really like "A Beautiful Mind" too

new question:

How many hours time difference will it be from where you are now and Socorro?

I'll be shifting 2 hours (Eastern time to Mountain time)

I'll be shifting back 15 (I think) hours. Yay for jetlag.

GMT +7 to Pacific Time.

i was watching Master and Commander today in history

since AP's are over

and we were playing video games in Chem and Calc since APs are over

too bad we cant get out of school

2 hours for me from NYC..i think...

oow, today we had this math competition at Queens College, and i totally rocked! Out of 10 questions, the only one i knew how to do, i got wrong because of miscalculation error...:)
so 0 out of 10 for me :)

anyways, i decided to make a problem marathon (similar to the AoPS forum has). So, if anyone is interested, this is one problem from this olympiad (hopefully it's not protected by copyright laws)

No calculators.
Time Limit: at most 15 min (they were very cheap ;) ).

Consider the non-decreasing sequence: 1,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,4,4,......, in which positive integer n occurs n^2 times. What is the remainder when 2006th term of the sequence is divided by 9?

please no problem marathon

this is a forum for discussion about SSP

good effort but that doesnt belong here

im on AoPS so ... i will do it there but seriously, let's stick to the forum topic: "Summer Science Program SSP Introduction Thread" as created by dear Ahra
