Summer Science Program SSP Introduction Thread

it is not up to the reader to do the writer's job

but still, you don't have to be mean about it. "s-t-f-u"...i mean, that was kinda unnecessary, wasn't it?

whatever. i don't want to start a fight lol before we get there :D

ahhh, one more week till my sat iis and i'm not ready at all....ehhh....
and helpmegetin, are you attending SSP as well?

yea i have to agree that was pretty uncalled for

but it is not up to the reader to do the writer's job

Which sat IIs are you taking?

I took US history and chemistry in May (right after the AP exams, so I was already pretty studied up) and I'm retaking my regular SATs next saturday.

I also took the sat II for world history at the end of last year (which was probably a bad idea, since for all practical purposes I didn't learn anything in world history 1, begining of the world to 1500, and I didn't take world history 2, I took AP euro, so I geuss I knew about 25% of the material on the test, and I didn't really study for it either... and I walked out thinking I got like... a 400 or so... but in the end I did fine though so I geuss there was a really big curve :) lucky for me I geuss)

800 for SAT II chem is inevitable with good AP chemistry teacher

800 for physics or math is non-related to calculus or physics c, unless you took physics b

you can omit 30 questions on SAT II physics and still get a 700 but your percentile rank will be VERY LOW and embarrassing

im not going to SSP this year...i didnt know about it soon enough...so next year maybe

I got really confused on the SAT II chem because of all those wierd T/F/T/F/CE questions, and I took too much time on them, and didn't get to like... the last 8 questions. I think it'll be alright though, because I felt like I knew most of the other stuff (and I had a great AP chem teacher) it was just a matter of not studying to the test. Anyway we'll see on Wednesday, when I can find out my scores.

Thats crazy about missing 30 questions on the physics test... I'm sooo taking that in the fall!

well, helpmegetin, we'll let you know how it goes

oh i love and hate those T F CE questions! i hate because if you get one wrong, ITS ALL WRONG!!! NOOOOO!!!!

but it also is tricky, which i like

i omitted two questions ARGH

you never purchased a study book? you should have studied those questions before going in!

yea and remember shadowdancer, there is usually a pretty big curve with most SAT IIs except for those language exams

yea you can OMIT 30 questions on the physics SAT II and still get a 700 but remember! caveat: a 700 is not the only score--you also get a percentile which will probably be in the 50%

Yeah I had no idea... My history teacher told me that if I studied a lot for the AP exam (for US history) I probably wouldn't have any problem getting a really good score on the SAT II. (and he was right... compared to the AP, the satII was really easy.) I just assumed it was the same for chemistry too. The questions weren't hard really, just different. Now, of course, I really wish I had gone and bought a study book and practiced some. There isn't anything I can do about it now though, so I'm not worrying.

On another note...

It is 19 days, 22 hours, 38 minutes and 40 seconds until Sunday, June 18, 2006 at 2:00:00 PM (Albuquerque time)

this is crazy

i cant believe you guys didnt buy a study book and just walked into the test!

sheesh

seriously, there is no need in spending that amount of money for books that dont teach you anything new
what they taught us in AP classes should be enough for "walking into [any] test" and getting 800 :p......

ok, ok, you're right, maybe it would be a good idea to look on the internet for some sample question, just in case

'im kinda sad now, i have 'normal' SAT this SAT, which im taking for the first time....gulp
im sooooo dead :(

Ahhh haha.
I had a really crappy chemistry teacher (I had a sub for one full quarter, shucks) so i'm kinda screwed haha. same for physics as well - i am horrible at physics. I'm pretty confident about the US history, but I don't think I can manage an 800. I always end up screwing up one way or another :P

I have 5 days left to study...Eh. Lets hope I can manage a 750+ on them all..haha.

I'm just prepping on AP Stuff. I figure, they must pretty similar material ;) And if it aint....well........

Ahh! Two more days till May SAT IIs results come out :/ I'm kinda worried, but I'm more scared about the results for AP Exams, to be frank.

BUT ON TO HAPPIER MATERIAL!!!
I saw X-men II today. It was sad...and it made me angry. Action paceked and interesting...but not much content, sadly.

hriundeli,

you are wrong.

those books are cheap and can make the test go much smoother

"what they taught us in AP classes should be enough for "walking into [any] test" and getting 800 ......"

that is a very ignorant and misleading comment

its what i used to think but be careful because it might bite you in the ass

Matt, that's not necessarily true either. I still maintain that the absolute best preparation for the SAT II Physics is solid understanding of the material. That means having a good teacher, paying attention in class, etc.

You absolutely do not need prep books to do well on the SAT IIs. The tests were designed to be pwned without any prep material whatsoever.

Of course, a PR book would be IDEAL, but not NECESSARY. One can still pull off an 800 as well. I mean, this AP Physics book I've got here seems mundane and unnecessary; there's nothing in this "review book" I already don't know (let alone command).

And let's face it, who wants to spend 20 bucks on prep material when it was never needed in the first place?

If you don't have a solid understanding of the material, in any subject, a couple days with a review book isn't going to do you a lot of good. On the other hand, it helps to know what the questions are like.

Yeah... 20 dollars is like... ten months worth of breakfast cereal. Why buy a book if it's not really needed? On the other hand, I have a friend who has a Math1/2 book, and she taking the Math 1 test next weekend, and she's giving me her book so I can use it for studying to take the Math 2 test in the fall sometime.

yep, yep, yep-that's what i meant, that's what i wanted to say

now, let's calm down
i said it "SHOULD be enough...", not "WILL be enough..."

then, i said that it would be a good idea to do a couple of sample questions before the actual exam
and at last, this:

makes no sense without support, and, which is more important in my opinion, makes other people think not too high of you. :p

gee, i love arguing; that's what i put on the student questionare :D
good luck, my roommate, MUAHAHAHA! :)

oh god i hope people dont think im high

well i do admit that i did not study for sat II chem, just used AP knowledge

but my physics C course will not help me with physics SAT II as it only covers E&M and mechanics, thus a review book helps

and not all of us go to great schools, mr pham

and for some we need books to get our 800s

"On the other hand, it helps to know what the questions are like."

i rest my case

pham,

your teachers are professors?!

advanced academy, as you cite on AoPS, is a very unique place
