Summer Seminar 2008

This thread will be available to ask the all important SS questions. What should I wear, a suit & tie, Polo and khaki’s, trysty old jeans. Should I bring a sleeping bag? Will I get the classes I want? What is better rockets and space, or (I forgot the other choices)…

So I actually have a question... Is doolie for a day, the ENTIRE day? Or is it just like an afternoon or anything?

More to follow for sure!

Its starts early in the morning, they wake you up like they do during basic, and for 2012 it went until about 3, then they have a dinner and some awards.

Hows the food?

Delicious. ;)

I loved the food we had at SS, even the MRE on Doolie for a Day

It took me about an hour to open the stupid thing.

yeah, i'd had one before so it wasn't quite as hard

So I don't want you to ruin it for me, but whats a basic overview of what we do on doolie for a day? Like basic activities, ect.

Try and make it sound mysterious:) I'm likin the anticipation ;)

uhhh...for 2011 we got up early...did some stuff...did some classes...did some more stuff...did another class...did a bunch more stuff...and then had some oh so delicious food. That mysterious enough? haha, sorry, just couldn't resist...

I'm not entirely sure what ya'll will be doing...the 2012ers are the ones to answer that question. Ask me next year and I might actually have an answer (I'm hoping to work SS next year).

They woke us up reeeeeeeally early, we ran around, got yelled at a little, ran around some more, had an MRE for lunch, ran around some more, got yelled at some more, then they let us take a shower :) I honestly don't really remember the whole day, parts of it are pretty much a blur! In the interest of mysteriousness, I'll keep it at that!

Just a random question, but is there any swimming during SumSem? I'm a terrible swimmer and want to know if I should learn or not.

I don't remember any swimming during SS, but it's still a valuable skill to work on. You'll experience the joy of Water Haze during your sophomore year, so I'd say practice if you can.

Water Haze? Oooo, sounds foggy, hazy... Almost mysterious (I'm stickin with my theme for this thread ;)).

I would love to hear some elaboration on this "Water Haze."

Three digs...? ;)

Three digs have at least two PE courses, swimming and water survival (AKA water haze). Swimming is...well, you guessed it...a lot of swimming, some survival stuff, and the 5m scenario. Water haze is more swimming, lots of survival stuff, the 10m scenario, and the 5m scenario.

10 m (~32 feet) has never looked so high :)

As bad as people say swimming and water haze are, they really aren't so bad. I wasn't a good swimmer and hated it, but did fine in the end in those two classes. I continue to swim 3x a week now thanks to learning better in those classes.

Yeah, being scared of heights doesn't help, either!

10m......."Ok, I have to do this! Look at the flag--Oh *&^%!--step off. Arms out, arms in. Splash. Level out. Swim toward that big white thing. There's the bulkhead! Swim under--DANG, I'm deeper than I thought! Surface sweep and clear."

It's not so bad!

I went two summers ago do NOT bring too many I completely overpacked. Like two pairs of jeans some shorts and something for the dinner/dance. Do not go crazy over dress but do dress up a . Take the civil engineering class if you can I got out of most of my Doolie Day ;) Wonderful timing haha.

I got none of the classes I wanted but I may have been in the minority I can't remember. Doolie day is for most of the ay they give you about and hr to get ready for the big dinner. I am a girl that about killed me the guys had a much easier time of it
