Hello, I just applied to the summer seminar at each of the three main service acadamies. The only one that game me information on when I would hear back, was the Naval Academy, which is by May 1st. I was wondering if anyone was aware when I would hear back from USMA or the Air Force Academy? I want to go to West Point the most, so I am anxious to hear back from them, and if I get accepted to AF I need to make travel arrangements. Thank you!
I just got a brochure in the mail that said applicants will be notified no later than April 15th. West Point has rolling applications, so they send out acceptances even before the deadline, which is March 30th this year. I’m not sure about USAFA because I’m not applying there. I know they look at the “whole person” aspect, but do you know what SAT score is generally acceptable?
From research I have done you want to get 1800+ to feel good about your chances.
what about subscores?
Again, from what I’ve seen I believe the average is 600 for each of the 3. I personally am trying to get 650 or above for the three, because of course you don’t want to be average you want to stand out. If you get 700’s or above in each of the three then your SAT score is fantastic for the military academy, if you have a lot of community service and leadership on your application as well with a score of 2100 you can feel pretty confident about getting it, but you can never be 100% sure.
I suggest you go to the USMA admission website and look at the Class Profile. It will show you average scores for admitted cadets. While it does list a breakdown of all areas of the SAT/ACT on this page, I can tell you that they academies most heavily weight only 2 sections of the test - Math and Reading (SAT)/English (ACT) and that Math has the heaviest weighting.
I’ve looked at all that, but I just don’t know how well the other applicants for the seminars generally do on the sat. I have below a 600 in CR and above 650 in Math, so my CR is below the average but my composite is over 1900 so I’m on the fence in terms of composites and subscores since they look at each invididual subject.
Just apply and see how it turns out. Where you live, your gender and if you are an URM can all influence if you get in. The academies will use this as some what of a recruitment tool. Both my kids were accepted into USMA’s and USNA’s summer programs. It seemed as though USNAs was the “easiest” to get into, as they offer the most slots. There are plenty of great candidates who do not get in, nor should you infer if you do not get selected for the summer program that you are not competitive for admissions. Neither of my kids had completed the ACT/SAT before applying to the summer seminars, so their only score was their PSAT. DD had a 202 on hers and DS had a 186 on his and they both got into both of these summer seminars.
Thank you for the information @MidwesternHeart , it is greatly appreciated. 1,800 candidates are selected out of about 8,000 right?
USNA last reported they had accepted 2550 out of 8000 applicants. USMA only takes about 1000 total, but I’m not sure if they have as many applicants to their summer program.
USMA says on their site that they accept 1,000 out of approx. 6,000 applicants. I know that USMA also has rolling applications (while USNA does not) meaning that they accept people even before the deadline which is March 30th. Therefore will it hurt you if you don’t apply early like most applicants and some are already accepted before you even apply?
Yes, you should apply ASAP. I would not delay the process.
Okay. I just was a bit hesitant because my CR score is in the mid 500s and I know that the below average is low 600s for applicants so i wanted to take my test this weekend and apply Feb. 11 when i get my results back
Just to clarify and perhaps remove some anxiety: SLE does NOT boost your chances for admission to USMA. Most appointees do not attend. SLE is a marketing tool and provides an opportunity for you to get a feel for the campus. It does not in any way give you a feel for the actual program. It does give you an opportunity to open your application, talk to some cadets, and do your CFA while you are there if you wish, but even that is not a requirement. So, if any of your angst is caused by believing SLE is a boost to your academy application, relax, it isn’t. If you get a slot, go, and have a good time. If you don’t, absolutely nothing is lost. Just put together the best application you can; that’s all anyone can do.
I just communicated with the individual at USMA who runs this program today. She told me that applications would close on April 1st. Maybe they will close sooner and notify accordingly
I don’t think they would close sooner, but it says on their site that they have rolling applications unlike USNA, meaning application acceptances go out even before the actual deadline which is the end of March. So the earlier you apply, the earlier you will probably hear from USMA if you get accepted. Lots of people have said they’ve received emails in the beginning of February after applying the day applications opened. Others applied an hour before it was due and still made it. I don’t think there will be a lower chance of getting accepted if you don’t apply ASAP. I’m waiting until I get my SAT score in the second week of February to apply.
I submitted my application for USMA’s SLE this past Friday. Do I have to submit my PSAT and SAT score through college board even though I typed it out in the online application or no? And does anyone know how long it takes them to reply?
I don’t think you have to submit your PSAT / SAT through the College Board but that is a very good question since your test scores are an important factor in SLE selection. They notify SLE applicants as files are reviewed but the cut-off is not until April 1st
@Wje9164be I was told by my regional admissions that I had to after I emailed them yesterday, but I don’t know if I can send another one in March after i take the Feb. 20 one because that one will be better. Probably not, but I’m not sure. The guy also said that I should be expecting a reply back in mid-February, so maybe that’s when SLE accepts the first ‘wave’ of applicants.
I know the deadline for NASS apps is the last day of March, but I just want to double check. Does anyone know where I can find it?
