Showbizkidz,

I sent you a PM

My daughter got her first Equity job at Shakespeare Dallas' musical production of Midsummer Night's Dream. And also a CMU Freshman and an OCU freshmen, all 3 students of Mary Anna's. FIRST EQUITY GIG!!!!!

Congratulations to your daughter as well as Mary Anna and her other students! It is obvious they are all extremely talented!!! An equiity gig to boot...very cool! All of us here are proud of all of you! Enjoy the moment mom!

Sissy--That's wonderful for your daughter!! How exciting. Does she know what role she'll be playing yet? How long does the show run?

Sissy,
Congratulations to your daughter. That is very exciting news!

Oh, and I forgot one more of her students besides my Daughter got the role of Ferdinand in The Tempest at Shakespeare Dallas!! He is a student at Tisch. I got so excited I forgot to mention him!

Hurray, Sissy! Congratulations to you and your D! Kudos, Mary Anna!

MTMommy:

The show runs June 24 - July 22

Sissy,

Major congratulations to your daughter! Shakespeare and music? What fun!

Will she take her Equity card or points under EMC? Not an easy decision, I know.

No contracts were offered the minor roles. She has been advised by her coach that obtaining an Equity card at this point is premature. Yes, Shakespeare and music will be fun! This rock musical retelling of Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream originated at the Dallas Theater Center and I have heard it is great. Might be a little hot doing a show outside for an entire month in July in TEXAS! But..D is VERY excited about it.

Sorry Sissy! I misunderstood when you said it would be her first Equity job...now I understand. Sounds like she has a trusted advisor to help with these decisions and that is the most important thing.

My D survived 8 weeks performing AND rehearsing outdoors in St Louis last summer and said it never bothered her. As long as they have an airconditioned place to sleep/rest, I think the adrenaline of having a great job trumps the heat! Sounds like a really fun show and a great opportunity for your D. Congrats again.

Very timely discussion. My S has two offers for summer work so far. One is equity and one non-equity. And, he still has StrawHat next weekend. So, can someone tell me the pros and cons of becoming a candidate this early in their career? My S is a freshman. I know practically nothing about this.

MTPop, I am in the same boat with you. The show she is in is an Equity show, but there are no contracts for the minor roles. From what I understand, you do not need an equity card until you are ready to become professional really. She is also a freshman in college as well as the other 3 that made the cast, and their advisor here told them that obtaining an Equity card at this point is premature. My D knows all about this stuff as they talk about it in her college, but not me! LOL Maybe someone else can explain it much better on here.

I've bumped up the thread entitled "Summer Program or Employment" from last year because it has lots of information on this issue as it was discussed last year. After reading these thoughts, I'm happy to entertain additional questions one year down the road from my D having accepted her Equity card as a result of her job at the MUNY last summer. It can be quite a complicated decision and I don't think that the answer is the same for each student performer. In a nutshell, I think the the best advice will come from the people who are working with your kids in their programs. They are usually the ones who know the business AND more importantly, know your child's skillset and where your child is in their artistic development.

I would love to hear impressions from any students (or parents who have heard from their students) who auditioned for StrawHats this past weekend. As this is a major non-Equity summer stock audition opportunity, I'm sure lots of folks would like to know what this experience was like in order to prepare for next year. And of course we can't wait to hear where we can go to see CC kids perform this summer.

Yes, me too! If we could have one or two accounts of Straw hat auditions (like the college auditions) that would be super.

I believe my son is still in the midst of callbacks. Maybe I'll have something to report in a few days.

I am willing to share about summer stock when I know what my daughter is doing this summer as well. That should be soon.

All who have kids auditioning for the summer, Equity, nonEquity, StrawHats, local stuff, etc will hopefully share, when ready, and so others can glean from experiences.

For those of you who have kids in the college admissions process, just you wait.....the auditioning and waiting never ends. There is even more competition numbers-wise in the big world of theater auditions in NYC.

MUNY has contacted the MALES that auditioned with job offers--a Soph MT at CMU got called so far. (Called last Friday and Saturday)
Apparently, they are calling girls today and tomorrow!! (Getting this from a pretty reliable source.)
Anyone have kids who auditioned for MUNY and made final callbacks?

My D's male friend was offered a job a MUNY. He is a college MT freshman. She told me his news a day or two ago.
