Just wanted to offer some words of wisdom because we were in the same place last year with my son. Applied to Bing Harpur as RD, his UW GPA was 91, SAT score 1,270, within the range, but on the low end of it. In March, he received a guaranteed acceptance for Spring 2018 and waitlisted for the Fall 2017. On May 9th, he was taken off the waitlist and enrolled for the Fall semester. SOM and Watson are very challenging to get into; Harpur and CPPA are less so. When we attended a summer event in our region, I spoke to Randall Edouard who was then in charge of the admissions and he basically confirmed what I heard, read and thought-so many students apply to Bing as safety, whether academic safety, or financial safety. Out of the applied population, about 40% get accepted, and from this accepted population, about 25% end up enrolling, so after May 1st when the deposits did not come in from those who went elsewhere, a slew of spots opened up.
Now, I want to offer you some highlights from the first semester because there are many unfavorable opinions about Bing, especially the social aspect of it. Of course, you can say that this is my son’s personal experience, so feel free to take it with a grain of salt. The top negatives I heard are “There is nothing to do” and “There are tons of kids from Long Island who stick to kids from their own high school”. Binghamton is not New York, DC or Boston, so don’t expect highbrow cultural attractions. There are, however, tons of things on campus and things in the town, to be honest, if one puts serious effort into their studies, they might not have so much free time to take in everything that the campus offers. Every day there is something going on and my son loves it, in fact, when he comes home, he tells me in 3 days that he wants to go back. His suitemates are great and he has many friends from other high schools, while it’s true that LI high schools are prevalent, there are kids from other NYS areas. Everyone he has met has been very friendly and socially, he has no issues whatsoever. Academically, it’s not easy and registering for classes is also pretty bad because all the interesting classes get filled very quickly so while he has not had a problem to register for his required major classes, when it comes to the electives, he had very slim pickings and both times had no choice but to take subjects that do not interest him; one such elective required too much work-it should not be this way. This situation is not unique to Binghamton-most of state schools, not just in NYS have issues with class scheduling due to fund limitations, but it would have been great if the NYS flagship, the public Ivy had a better deal. Overall, Bing is a tremendous value because unless you received an almost full ride elsewhere, you cannot find a cheaper school.

@babysladkaya Thank you for your very informative and honest post!

For those who were wondering about financial aid. My daughter was accepted on 10/29 and she she received an email today with her financial aid award.

11/29 not 10/29.

I received my financial award today and was only given a $2000 residential scholarship and $5500 in loans. Do they release more scholarships in March or do in state students not receive scholarships.

thank you… @babysladkaya …may i ask what his major is at harpur and what other schools did he reject?

What is your major at Harpur? Also, what college do premeds get in? Harpur?

This is probably it.

You don’t have to be a specific major for pre-med, my son is currently undeclared, but he did put down pre-med concentration to ensure that his adviser is aware and everything is on track in terms of taking courses.

Hey guys - just received Bing’s acceptance notification. I submitted my application on December 20, for those of you wondering.

@28cats what time? Did you apply RD?

@28cats what were your stats (SAT, GPA, OOS/IS, ETC.) if you don’t mind me asking?
