Hi @freddifresh my son’s stats are 1300 SAT 28 ACT Biochemistry

If anyone is deciding between Binghamton and Stony Brook (for a STEM major), could you please share your thought process and what made you decide one over the other? thanks

that’s a crazy #. My first went to another suny & they did have tripling but not nearly anything this high. Do you know if this is the same to students who are in the honors college.

I heard the 10th for the honors college. Not sure on financials.

Same boat with my son. Got into Binghamton Scholars program, which is very difficult. No $ though ( but can put in for stem scholarship) & Stonybrook, free tuition through merit, but close to home. Computer science major, wants to go away but looks like Stonybrook has better program. hard choices. Still waiting on other schools, but very unlikely will cost less.

@lovemycats What stem scholarship are you referring to? NYS stem scholarship which covers SUNY tuition? I thought it requires a student to teach for 5 years. Please let me know; thank you

@AJC teaching scholarship is something different. This is a NYS scholarship for SUNY schools equal to tuition in certain stem fields. You do need to be in the top 10% of your graduating class & documentation needs to be done on the hs end. Our hs notifies students eligible. this is the link of I did it right. https://www.hesc.ny.gov/pay-for-college/financial-aid/types-of-financial-aid/nys-grants-scholarships-awards/nys-science-technology-engineering-and-mathematics-stem-incentive-program.html

The STEM Incentive Program requires you to execute a Service Contract agreeing to reside and work in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics in NYS for five years.

Good program, but 5 years is a big commitment for a $20,000 scholarship. No big deal if you plan to stay in NY anyway, but if you leave before 5 years, you have to pay it back.

As of know tuition is about $7,000, so a total of $28K. I know not a huge amount but it is something & then my son can apply that savings which we will give him toward his masters, which he plans on doing. iiWe will wait out the choices & decide what to do. As of know he wants to stay in NY. I am also thinking if he does this the cost of 4 years will be about $68,000 vs $96K & scholarship increases if tuition increases. This is a Binghamton option, if he wants.

@lovemycats I thought the grant was $5,500 a year, my mistake. $28,000 is a lot of money. Looks like a good program for someone like your son. Best of luck to him!

Sounds like not much has changed at SB. As a sophomore transfer in 2009, my son was in a triple room in a triple suite. I was shocked at how cramped it was. There were three rooms: two rooms had two beds with two guys, and the third room had three guys with three beds and two desks. So there were 7 guys sharing a bathroom and a small LR.

The size of my son’s room shocked me. He was OK with it and after his first year his dorms got better and better. By Junior year he lived in West Apartments (great) and then he moved off campus to a ridiculous house that was certainly not in code. Students with higher GPAs were given priority and better choices which really makes a difference. These dorms are not for everyone. I noted that most of the young men did not seem to mind and were just happy to be OUT OF THE HOUSE and on their own, though! LOL

@freddiefresh instate. School of engg. 3.45 gpa uw and 1470 sat. Just found out last weekend no merit
