SUNY STONY BOOK - 2023 Decisions

Any undeclared or Liberal Arts majors accepted to SB 2023 and what are your stats?

@AJC SBU because it has higher ranked programs and is more well known for STEM. Also since it is relatively close NYC, there would probably be more companies recruiting at SBU than Bing due to convenience. I also am choosing SBU because itā€™s about 5k cheaper a year and closer to NYC where I currently live.

Anybody notice how the thread name is ā€œStony Bookā€ and not ā€œStony Brookā€?

The Tripling FAQ page talks about 2018-2019 - has the college done anything to address or correct this overcrowding problem for 2019? Son is out of state and would be there most weekends, having a comfortable ā€œhome away from homeā€ is a consideration.

is it possible to apply after jan 15? someone said they applied February bc they still had open seats and i strongly doubt it

@2023collegeboy Are you assuming that more companies will be recruiting for jobs in NYC or do you have resources which confirm it? I have been wondering about this for a while, and it would definitely be a major plus for SBU over Bing since we are also in NYC. Also, the travel costs from NYC to SBU would be lower for student or family (no hotel costs etc).

In addition, I think the cost difference between Bing and SBU is around $2-3k a yearā€¦

As a Stony Brook alum and as a senior member in technology in Manhattan this is my opinion. Stony Brook is a very good STEM school and strong in engg and comp sci. In terms of recruitment, companies hire from all over, and they donā€™t want to just hire from one school, we look for diverse college experiences. I personally donā€™t want my son to go to Stony Brook, it is overcrowded, very little chance to work with prof and classes are extremely packed and large. My son is opting for a different experience. That doesnā€™t mean Stony Brook isnā€™t a fit for others. But there are a lot of schools close to the city, Rutgers students get hired a lot in the city for business and engg.

Does anyone know how the psychology program at Stony Brook is like?

I got in back in January for Computer Science.
SAT 1330
GPA 4.6 W 3.8 UW
OOS California

@HSinLI are you saying you would choice Rutgers over SB for computer Sci. My son is down to those 3 schools. Binghamton & Rutgers costs are about the same with scholarships (although bing gave stipend 1 time stipend for research, or study aboard, or internship during summer of $3500), & SB gave scholarship for $7000. Also got into Rutgers honors & Bing Scholars, waiting on SB honors. Other then $ want job outcome & some internship experience. Thought on the 3. Still waiting on privates but right now RIT is $10 more.

@lovemycats donā€™t get me wrong. They are both strong school but I have noticed that Wall Street firms have been going to a lot of closer schools like Rutgers and Stevens especially since a lot of tech jobs for the bigger banks have been moving to Jersey City. Just went to the Rutgers Honors visit today. Seems like a strong program, my son is just not into the campus especially since he might have to bus around a lot. His top choice remain U Conn. stony Brook dropped since we have been hearing first hand about classes being overcrowded and now dorms.

@HSinLI We are going to the honors meeting there next week. I am also turned off by the buses. My son feels he sees pluses & negative for all the school. He too applied to Stevens & likes them but I donā€™t think it will be affordable for us. Thanks

@lovemycats We werenā€™t that impressed with the honors college at Rutgers. Mandatory to stay at college ave honors dorm. The dorms are beautiful but that it.

Did anyone get a letter in mail from Stony. We just saw acceptance online last week.

@HSinLI Yes, we got a letter in mail a couple of days ago.

@HSinLI Yes you are correct that the dorms are overcrowded at Stony Brook but the students who do get tripled are only tripled for the first semester of freshman year with the option of detripling to a double in the second semester of freshman year. Majority of students who are tripled in freshman year tend to opt and stay tripled because they end up liking their roommate situation. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors do not get tripled and you can apply for single rooms if you likeā€¦

Daughter received acceptance via email on 3/8/19 - Unweighted GPA 3.6 - SAT 1260 - 5 APā€™s - Numerous clubs / community service. Intended Major: Marine Vertebrae Biology. I donā€™t think she will accept - her first pick is Univ Delaware for Pre-Vet / Bio Med. Good luck to all.

Is it about that time that denials start rolling out? Still havenā€™t heard back for Computer Scienceā€¦

Looks like students started receiving acceptances, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE

Really hope I hear back today so I can finally stop stalking the SOLAR portal??
