Swarthmore Class of 2018 Regular Decision Thread

coase, that came across as a tad coarse. Relax folks, remember that as hard as it is to wait this is a first-world problem. There are far worse issues to deal with and to have in one’s life. It’s exciting and we’re all on edge - but keep it in perspective. Ommmmmm.

In California. Nothing in the mail today.

And, you won’t see anything until after momof3sons says they’re in the mail.

@hotspurs …rejected and waitlisted are not notified through fedex, they will most likely receive emails first and then the letter in regular mail

For those who received “early write” letter, has anyone received financial letter yet? When will Swarthmore notify accepted students financial aid? Thank you for answer that question.

All they sent us was a letter with the admissions decision. The letter said that packets with financial aid and other information will be sent out in late March. It could be any day now…

ok so an “early write” is not a regular decision letter? Confused about the terminology being used here.

No, an “early write” is different than an RD decision. A number of schools, including Swarthmore, send out a small amount of “early write” letters. These are also called “likely” letters and are an early indication to a student that he or she will be admitted to a particular college when the RD decisions are sent out. Some schools send them out targeting under-represented minorities and some may target students who have shown particularly strong talent or interest in a particular field.

Sometimes, the “early writes” are an attempt to lure the superstars, to “snag” their interest before they receive other offers of admission. This is a general overview of the concept, not a description of what Swarthmore’s particular interests may be.

They just posted pictures on his official twitter of them sealing decision letters. They are being sent out today!
https://twitter.com/SwatAdmissions

They may have already been sent out. Just because the pictures were posted today doesn’t mean they were sent out today.

I guess this is obvious, but…The thick letters in the larger envelopes have the good news, and the thin letters have the not-so-good news? Also, I notice there’s already a Facebook page for the class of 2018. Since the letters have gone out, does that mean that everyone with an acceptance has just been invited to join this page? Thanks.

Probably, but there were also Early Decision applicants and likely letters sent out.

wistful…the “tell” isn’t thickness. The difference will be a small card and return envelope for you to send your deposit (for those accepted). To join the FB group, someone in admissions will have to approve your request to join.

I know this is going to sound crazy…but you’ll know soon enough, so accept whatever comes next as the right answer and wait for the mailman. Stay offline as much as possible, and don’t assume anything when you start reading about others getting in. If you’re even applying to a school like Swarthmore…it’s all gonna work out!

We got a snail mail letter about a week ago asking for a very specific clarification regarding son’s financial aid application. Should we read anything into this regarding the likelihood that he is admitted? I can’t help but think they wouldn’t get to that level of detail unless he was admitted.

Please don’t read into that, as tempting as it is to do so. Financial aid decisions at Swat are made totally independent of what goes on in the Admissions office. Good luck to your son!

Thanks for the reality check. Don’t want to set him up for a disappointment. I know that admissions decisions are need blind I just figured that FA office doesn’t do all the calculating until they get word that a student has been admitted. Why would they do full calculations on every applicant? We’ll know either way soon enough. Probably not until Monday here though.

Do you think they’ll send out the rejection and waitlist emails before all the accepted letters arrive in the mail or will they wait? It will take a letter about four days to reach me and I’ll be out of town by that day. Sould I hope that if I don’t get an email before then it will be good news?

last year they released decisions for international students via email on April 2nd (or 4th can’t remember exactly)

that release date is quite late. Does that mean that even international students will receive acceptance package first and the email notification after?(if they are accepted)

FedEx packages for accepted internationals have already been put together.
