Switching Colleges

Hello AU-hot-chicks-who-like-to-answer-questions-on-CC,

I just enrolled for January 2007 semester at AU (I did not get fall admission, but I think I signed up for the Washington Semester thing for the fall). I have few questions.

Can I switch from the College of Arts and Sciences into another college (SPA, SIS, or SOC?). I am currently put as a Philosophy major, despite the fact I applied undecided (they must have read something where I put one of my favorite interests as Philosophy).

Is the Washington Semester thing anygood? Will I get to socialize with regular AU students?

Is it easy to meet people when if admitted in the spring (like I am)?

Please reassure me that I made I good decision. :)

Sincerely,

Dear Confused-AU-soon-to-be-freshmen-guy,

I will try to answer your questions to the best of my ability in the order that they were presented

1) Since you are a frosh, and don't have a college GPA it shouldn't be hard to switch majors. This is esp true becuase your first two years you really work on gen eds and stuff (such as math, college writing, etc). A person actually don't have to declare a major until either 2nd semster of their soph year or first semster of your jr yeah. Anyway i have changed around my major/ minor situation about 3 times this year... your FINE.
The only issue that may come up is that the SIS/ SPA program is ranked higher then the other programs at AU, but since your transfering from the tentely campus (to which your will recieve a first semster gpa) your situation can change greatly then the current one that you are in now. When you come 2 campus, talk 2 your academic advisor, they can help you out on this issue then I can (considering that i am a lost and confused soon to be soph myself!!)

2) Is the washington semster any good?
I wouldn't know personally, because i enrolled at the main campus in the fall of 05, but what i can tell you from others who were part of the program is that they loved it! You can earn 15 credits and get an internship, which sounds really cool. This can help jump start your resume.
Will I get to socialize with other AU students
-YES if you join clubs/ activities. Groups such as college dems, crew, Hillel, etc do not exclude people who are part of the washington program w/ their activities. If you get involved with these types of opportunities, you will have a chance to get to know other students who aren't part of the washington program

3) YES it is easy to meet others again, if you get involved. If you stay in your room in the tentley campus, and you don't come to the main campus, then you won't meet other people. If you get involved with groups and programs on campus, then u shouldn't have issues meeting people who live on the main campus.

In addition in the spring semster, you move into the dorms, and do realize that no one holds it against you that you were in the washington program. Actually until my friend explaiend the program 2 me, i thought that you guys like applied for this speical program, and like were one of the chosen few, out of a pool of 6,000 incoming frosh who got selected :)
In addition with spring classes, you meet so many people, and no one has to know (if u decided not to tell them) that you were in fact admited for the spring. In collges, classes run on semster intervals, so that your class ends in dec, and a new class begins in the spring, so no one knows that you like "transfered in."

Did you make a good decision? yeah i think so. You can get a really cool internship, get some credits compleated, and be part of a close knit community. It sounds fun and it sounds really cool, and then in the spring you can transfer to the main campus, and no one has to know the difference. Plus everything changes semerster 2 semster. So many people drop out, move back home, find housing off campus (or come back to live on campus) transfer (in or out) etc. So like it isn't "weird" that you just like "show up" on campus. The campus is big enough so that many people don't like "notice" that your the new kid on campus. Plus there are so many people that you'll meet and love in the tentley campus.

One more note: (your luck my class was cancled!!)
-just becuase you don't live here, it doesn't mean that you can't hang out and use the facilities here on campus. You can eat at TDR (the main campus dining room) you can use the libary, the gym, hang out at MGC, throw a frisbee on the quad, etc. Just becuase you don't live here, it doesn't mean you can't hang out anywhere around campus.

good luck!!!! see you around ;-)
