Did anyone here take Laurie Smith for genetics? A lot of my friends are refusing to enroll in this class with me for Fall2011 because she's supposed to be "hard." >__< ratemyprofessors seems kind of mixed in opinion. Is it true she doesn't really go by the text? How is she as a lecturer? How are her tests?

How is genetics as a subject, anyway? I used my bio AP credit to pass out on the entire BILD series, and the last time I've touched a bio text was two years ago :\ I'm under the impression that bicd100 is all punnet squares, chi square tests, and mitosis/meiosis...like we learned in bioAP/genbio xD

my friend told me Smith is OK, but not the best genetics professor available. so at least she shouldn’t be bad, and i’ve also been told numerous times that as long as you do your hw and practice problems you should be fine for bicd 100.

Genetics was my first bio class I took since HS as well. I didn’t have Smith, but I had a professor most people thought was pretty difficult since he dove into mol bio concepts moreso than the other professors. But, I put in effort and I got an A just fine.

I heard Smith is pretty easy. Honestly, Genetics isn’t a class of memorizing the book as much as it is problem solving. Just know how to do ALLLLL the problems she assigns and pay attention in lecture. If something doesn’t make sense, listen to podcast or go to office hours. Just make sure you know how to do the problems honestly. Other than that, genetics is considered one of the easiest upper division bio classes. The main problem people have with this class is just that you are going to learn like a bunch of different genetic variations and genotype situations and the professor may give you some data on some offsprings or crosses. Sometimes it’s easy to confuse each situation you have in your head in the moment of the exam (recessive epistasis, lethal gene, etc etc) but just take the ratio of the numbers and work from there.

Thanks for all the advice! Someone told me genetics is the basis/foundation for a lot of bio classes and labs, so I really want to learn the material thoroughly.

sorry for hijacking the thread, but do u know if ghiara is any good for genetics? there are also mixed reviews about him as well. First ppl say he’s an automatic easy A, then they say he’s not.

The people that say he is an easy A actually put in a significant amount of time to study, whereas the people that didn’t get A’s are the ones that thought he was such an easy A and didn’t put in as much time.

He is a so-so professor. People only like him because his tests are incredibly basic and easy. The guy doesn’t even have a final exam… however, you can only miss like 9 questions total in the whole class to keep an A. Otherwise, you’ll get a B and join the hate group.
