My PSA son that went to Corpus started in 2013 so some things have changed about the campus itself. I saw parents from last year talking about how organized and helpful the PSA director in CC had been for them, however. The students did have several meetings together each semester and did have a class that helped them adjust to college life. (All students at TAMU-CC have this class but for my son most of his classmates in that class were PSA.) TAMU-CC had what was called a triad when my son was there and all students had 3 classes scheduled together and a faculty advisor who over saw each group. The university sends out emails to remind the PSA students about each of their deadlines to do their paperwork and such but I do know that some of each of my PSA sons’ friends missed some deadlines and were not able to transition to A&M. Make sure your student pays attention to their university emails no matter what school they attend! The campus is actually on an island that they share with a Coast Guard facility so it is kind of in its own bubble. That is nice. My son roomed with a friend from high school but I know that they met several PSA students at their new student conference. I would think that there would be a social media page where students could look for people they might want to room with. I would try to talk to the PSA coordinator when you visit. Both of my boys had great coordinators and they helped make the year successful and smooth.
My daughter got PSA but decided to go to Oklahoma state freshman year. She then applied for transfer and started her sophomore year. Finished a semester early. So transferring or PSA or PTA etc should not impact graduating in 4 years which is nice to know.
I’d look into doing PSA at West Texas A&M University… they have the first branch of TAMU Vet school now and their acceptance rate into A&M ver school is very high for WTAMU undergrads. My daughter did PSA at WTAMU and loved it. Transfer to A&M her 3rd semester was also easy.
We submitted our psa choices on Monday but haven’t heard anything from any of the psa schools yet. Anything else we need to do? I just don’t want to miss any timelines or due dates for anything.
Nothing more to do except research. The system schools will review everything and then reach out with next steps.
If you don’t hear anything and get antsy… call the system school you’re most interested in and check in with them.
I called the school of our choice to get things rolling.
My kiddo got PSA last night and I have tons of questions.
Biology… it’s not on the Major List. Microbiology or Molecular & Cell Biology are not on the PSA list. These are the only Majors he has ever been interested in. So is it possible to even go the PSA route? Reading this thread, it’s not recommended. So my main question is, why would they give him PSA? It makes no sense? Don’t take me wrong, I’m not angry, I’m just trying to understand.
I don’t see on the PSA course work sheets which PSA schools are the approved schools for each major. Am I overlooking that? Do you have to click the participate button in AIS to see that? If we click it, does that mean he would be accepting that route without being able to investigate it more?
Instead of taking the PSA route, is the best choice (for him) to go where he’s been accepted in his Major and transfer to CSTAT in to the Major he wanted to begin with but as a Sophomore? I’m thinking the answer here is yes but wondering if we are just going to be disappointed next year. What % of transfers are accepted?
We have planned a tour on 3/25. We are still going because he still wants to see CSTAT in person because who knows if we will have time later. We only did a virtual tour early in the process because it’s all we could fit in with his Band schedule and our work schedules.
@ChristiR93, will reach out for guidance but show patience while you enjoy Spring Break. We literally just got home from our Spring Break cruise and got his decision on the 17 hour drive home.
One caveat for PSA…you might be better off going elsewhere and try to transfer directly WITHOUT PSA. My son spoke with an advisor in February who told him do NOT accept PSA if offered because the GPA threshold for his desired major was 3.5 for PSA and only 3.25 for direct transfer (coming from Blinn, another university, or community college). Bottom line: do NOT get hung up on PSA as a “direct and guaranteed path to TAMU”. It is, but it might just be a harder path to get there. Know EXACTLY what the requirements are for PSA vs direct transfer for your desired major. All the majors have different entry requirements.
Oh no that’s not a good way to end SB. My flight just got cancelled… not a good way to start SB. But we do get to leave tomorrow after a bunch of creativity!!!
But yes, reach out. I would say straight transfer from another university is great option. Gives him a full freshman experience and who knows, he may love it there and stay. You’ll want to look at bio transfer sheet to make sure he is set up nicely by application time. We can go over that.
Y’all have a s wonderful SB and vacation!
My daughter has already been accepted to the system school she would hope to attend through PSA. Does it complicate things to proceed with PSA if she’s already accepted to a university within the “system”? I’m at a loss on advice to give her at this point.
I have the same question. My daughter has already been accepted to the system school as well. She will graduate high school with 33 college hours. I don’t know what route would be best, PSA or wait to apply for PTA after graduation.
33 dual credit hours? And if so… what’s the DC gpa?
Her high school offers early start pathway. Most classes are counted for DC and others are college credit only, which she took during the summer. Her current college gpa is 3.55. She’s pending two classes to finish before graduation.
So to transfer you need 24 graded credits. 12 has to come from fall semester. If they have the required courses for transfer, then they can apply in January for fall admission. Straight transfer and no guarantee. But 3.5 is solid.
We are in the same boat for Animal Science, no pathway but was given PSA. She met an advisor for Animal Science at Aggieland Saturday. She has sent an email to see what she suggests. She was already accepted to Tarelton, a PSA school. She will most likely go there and do a direct transfer. I’ll let you know what I find out.
Thanks for the info.
Attention parents: Please feel free to join the below Facebook group created as a network of support to help navigate, share experiences, and provide resources for the PSA/PTA route to TAMU!
It actually makes it easier if you’re already accepted to the school that you are interested in for PSA. They can combine the paperwork and know that you qualify for the system school.
Where do you see which PSA schools excepted to?
Thank you
