It's required for teachers to fill out the teacher evaluation form, but nowhere on the Common App does it say recommendation letters are required. Does that mean we don't need rec letters?

Also, say a school requires 2 teacher evaluations. Is it acceptable to ask one teacher to fill out an evaluation+write a letter, another to fill out an evaluation only, and a third to write a letter only? I'm asking this because one of my recs, which is 'completed' on Naviance, came from a teacher who left the school after last school year. My counselor did not receive a teacher evaluation form from her, however.

It varies from college to college. Check the college’s website to see how many and what kind of letters are required.

The teacher “evaluation” is a list of adjectives, check boxes, and a text box. Teachers can either write in the text box or attach a document. (Most attach the LOR.)

Anyone know the answer to my second question?

It’s not a good idea to patch it together the way you suggest with 3 teachers but only 2 LORs. Really the ‘evaluation’ is just a vehicle for a LOR. If you already have one and its good and you want to use it, your college counselor should be able to figure that out between Naviance and the Common App, or you could contact that teacher if necessary since s/he already did the hard work. Colleges are clear that you should only bring in a third recommender if that person has something really different to say from the other two.
