So next year I start applying for colleges (yay...). I am going to try my best to get my teachers to move to online since it is a lot easier. My question is: once a teacher submits a recommendation for you, can you send that off to multiple colleges or do you need to get their permission every time you plan to apply to another college?

Once the teacher recs are uploaded inside the common ap then you can assign them to any school that takes the common app and they will then be uploaded by that school.

For schools that do not take the common app, you will need to mail a hard copy. At our HS the guidance counselor held a hard copy of the teacher recs and mailed them to those schools that were not common ap ones along with all the other paperwork that they must send for you.

Follow-up question: Can you have multiple teachers upload recs and pick and choose which ones are sent to whatever colleges?

You can but you would have to contact the common app to find out how many teachers can submit recs in total. Then yes, you would pick and choose which teacher rec you want sent to which school.

You will find that all schools request a certain number then tell you how many more you could send. I would not go overboard sending too many though.

Thanks for the quick reply, Lakemom.

I’m assuming that you can’t view them, though? Confidentiality and all that goes into recs.

The etiquette is that you waive your rights to see the rec so no, you won’t be able to see them unless your teacher gives, emails you a copy. The waiving of your rights is supposed to ensure that the rec is truly unbiased since the teacher knows you can’t see them.
