Television

Any insights on having a TV in your dorm room? Cable company costs? Rooms are wired? She's in Kade. D doesn't really watch mainstream TV - more history channel, old movies, etc. if she does watch.

I think most people don’t bring TVs to campus, but it is possible since my roommate did bring one and get cable. I’d truthfully say it takes up space and there isn’t a lot of time to watch it. All dorms do have TVs in the lounge so most likely you can find some place to watch your favorite shows.

My D and her roommate shared a TV and cable last year. They were in an old freshman dorm that was wired. What is Kade? Is that the brand new freshman dorm?

The bill was about $42 bucks a month plus an installl fee. I can’t remember if that included any premium movie channels. As far as having enough space, just make sure it’s a flat screen LCD instead of an old-style CRT. My D perched her TV on top of the mini-refrigerator-freezer in their room. It was perfect height in terms of eye level when in a sitting position.

Kade is the German program. $42/mo is kinda strong. I’m not used to paying cable bills, since my husband works for the cable company we get it free at home. We were trying to get the layout for Kade but the one they have online is from prior to the renovation in 2008. Obviously a new one has not been done per admissions.

Most students do not bring TVs; they’re usually too busy to watch much TV, and when they want to, they can either use the ones in the dorm lounges or stream the programs on their computers.

The layout of Kade did not change in the renovation, which was cosmetic, not structural.

Don’t bother bringing a TV. Hulu and other sites will provide shows when a kid really wants to just veg out and watch it, whereas otherwise it simply provides an unneeded distraction.

Dave72. Interesting what you say about Kade. My D’s room assignment shows on the layout as a single but she was assigned a roommate. When I asked admissions, they said that the layout was wrong since the renovation and she indicated that the facility was “gutted” in 2008 and was basically new inside. I just assumed that meant some walls must have changed if a single was now a double.

@POTOMom: It’s possible that some rooms were renumbered during the renovation, but I don’t believe the floor plan was changed. New windows, new roof, new paint and furnishings–but I’m fairly certain the walls didn’t move.
