So, I'm starting here with summer classes, and I have to say that this has not been the greatest experience of my life. It's not that I'm miserable; it's just that there seems to be absolutely nothing social to do here for a new person, and there are no obvious (to me, anyways) open doors to get connected on campus.
My apartment for the summer sucks and I'm overpaying for it, but I can definitely make peace with that as long as I have a decent social network. I have made some acquaintances in my classes, but I'd REALLY like to meet some people outside of my major (I'm EECS, so they're all dudes). I was thinking about signing up for one of their windsurfing lessons over the weekends, but I'm worried that I would be the only person going without a group. That would be really lame. It seems that the clubs aren't active during the summer, and I am at a loss. I really just hope that I didn't make the biggest mistake of my life by choosing Cal over UCLA, but I'm trying really hard to drown out those thoughts for now. Any ideas on where/how to meet other people?

One thing on the Berkeley campus that’s really magical is the botanical garden. Also, I were you, I would get out of town for a weekend, and take a hike. The wilderness in No. Cal. is absolutely breath-taking. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Just to address the UCLA thing- you shouldn’t think that you made the wrong decision. Clubs are basically inactive during the summer, and you will have way more opportunities to participate in those once the school year gets started! That is one of the major ways that people make friends at such a big school…even if you can’t see it yet.
