Applied Temple Option
My son just applied. Can I ask how long it took to receive a confirmation from Temple? Sometimes the emails get buried, but I like to have some info before I ask him to double check.
^^^^ My D had her answer in about 4 weeks. Looks like admission is running 4-8 weeks right now. You will not get a separate email. Your son needs to periodically check his TU Portal account. The acceptance will appear there first.
Thanks @PhilaSkiMom ! Did you get an email from Temple with instructions or an id to log on to the portal, or are you able to just go set it up? Off to look around now…
Yes. Once you get the email that Temple received the application, it will have a link to log into the TU portal and create an account. Good luck!
Thanks. I asked him to double check. I wanted some independence with this, so he put his own email on the Common App, but unfortunately, he was getting tons of school email from the the College Board, which he since unsubbed from, and that causes things to slip through the cracks. Thanks again!
ah the joys of high school seniors…
It took about 24-48 hours for my son to get the Email from Temple w instructions on how to set up a portal after his common app submission…( my son had already set up a Temple portal to schedule visits etc… so we didn’t know if he needed a new portal or if he could use the old portal … turns out he made a new one but it had everything from the old one in it they go by your identifying number we had some problems seeing what docs they were waiting on- but we called and got everything figured out)
After all docs were in -it took about 4weeks for a decision and we still haven’t received then mail package yet a week later but are told that comes 1-2 weeks after you see admission on portal
One other school my son applied for took 10 days to get an email w instructions on how to set up a portal… so it may take a little time to receive that initial portal email…
Best of luck!
@mstomper So we just got the formal acceptance letter for my son which included his scholarship information. I know you were wondering how Temple would weight your son’s GPA so thought I’d share this with you and anyone else who may be wondering whether their child’s GPA will qualify them for a scholarship.
My DS had a 3.18 UW and a 4.1 W. All of his academic classes were either Honors or AP level (5 AP total). He was offered the Founder’s scholarship ($5000 per year) which requires a GPA >= 3.25 and < 3.4. It would seem that Temple’s weighting algorithm only jumped his GPA from 3.18 UW to something between 3.25 and 3.4 which leads me to believe that Temple does not give a significant boost to GPA for AP or Honors classes. This was definitely a bummer for us.
Thanks, @adigel. That is a bummer when you think your kid could be in the running for the top scholarship. Our som is 3.29/3.95, so what happened with you guys doesn’t bode well for him. I read that applications are up significantly at Temple; I wonder if that caused them to change their algorithem? I’ll hold out a little hope that he gets bumped to 3.6, which will have to happen for it to be affordable. His grades were also much higher the first quarter this year, so maybe he can appeal. If not, he still gets tuition +room at Ole Miss. Best of luck to your son. I’m glad you gave me that info, but I don’t think I’ll tell our son yet.
Yes, your son very well might get bumped up to 3.6 or higher as that is only a .31 bump over his current UW GPA. My son got somewhere between a .07 and a .21 bump so a .31 bump isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
My son’s grades are also higher this first marking period. Has there been any discussion in these boards related to appealing scholarship awards and whether or not Temple will adjust scholarship amounts based upon senior year grades?
Thanks for the info about getting the actual acceptance package and scholarship info… my son was accepted via portal Nov 10th …and despite checking the mailbox hourly since then, hasn’t received the actual letter yet… guessing letters are running at least 2 weeks behind portal notification…??
He did receive an email from Fox Business Honors saying he would be a perfect candidate for their program and to contact them to set up any tours/visits/sit in on classes that he wants… (hopefully this means he is accepted into Fox honors program -right?)
The waiting is so hard and the longer he waits the more schools he wants to apply to “just in case he doesn’t get it…” which is getting costly… and you hate to pull them out of school to go visit colleges until you know what the costs of the colleges will be… ahh senior year!
But I really appreciate the info updates from everyone, helps keep us sane!
As i noted on other thread, by all means appeal. don’t know answers to some of questions as not too many people have posted appeal data on here.
mstomper, i think you may be right on the money with GPA’s, when my son applied 2 years ago, Temple was still marketing to the high end students. they have a lot of those kids as Temple students now and with admissions up, 2 solid entering classes over last 2 years, they may be in position to be more selective, only a theory but it lines up with what another poster noted on kid getting less merit aid than expected.
and to all, remember Temple only looks at grades for core subjects. look at their scholarship page but they are math, English, science. etc. some people have used whole GPA on CC rather than core subjects and that messed up their calculations.
The sliver of hope I have for our S is that we’ve seen exactly what is weighted by his school. He also has several magnet classes that aren’t AP but are considered just as rigorous by many colleges. Since a lot of students go to Temple, he may have a shot. I think I probably should tell him what’s happening to kids with similar stats; he deserves to know.
yeah, better for him to have realistic viewpoint. although so far this is only one similar stat we are talking about, correct?
Sample size of one or two, so no reason to give up. It definitely looks like the Presidential is out of the picture. Grandparents have offered to help, 80k for 4 years at Temple versus 20k for 4 years at Mississippi is an awfully big difference. Once it goes above 100k it’s definitely in “not worth it” territory.
For what it’s worth, our school already strips out non-academic classes when calculating W and UW GPAs. So my son’s UW GPA of 3.18 is not inflated by high scores in non-academic courses that Temple would pull out when doing their own calculation.
Just curious…how many of you have received the actual acceptance letter? My daughter saw her acceptance on the portal almost a month ago, but nothing in the mailbox.
@beachfam We have received our actual acceptance letter. He was admitted via the portal on 11/4 and we received the letter on 11/21.
