Thanks for looking and giving me a chance

Hi guys...
Alright, compared to most on here, my figs are laughable. I just want to know though. Do I stand a chance? Can I have any hope at all?

fantastic essays (activity is solid; personal statement has a strong voice with huge ambition; gtown has a lot of passion and discusses how the schools mission lines up with my future goals)

superior letters of rec (best student in career--- made for politics, blah blah); supp letter from executive director of a HUGE lobbyist group in DC and the head Bishop of the Orthodox church on west coast (appeal to the Jesuit stuff hopefully?)

extracirrics are pretty strong

president of NHS, Orthodox Youth Group, Greek Fraternal Benefit group
VP of JSA, Choir
secretary of choir CLUB
science bowl captain
boys state alumn (detailed explanation)
hospital volunteer (200 hr)
also member of environmental club (got styrofoam trays banned from cafeteria by presenting data to school district)
academic decathlon (1st in county, 6th in state)
competitive greek dance for 10 years (two 1st place medals, two 2nd place medals, one 4th place medal----National)
altar boy for 9 years and altar captain for 3 years
competitive greek choir for 2 years (sweepstakes award----National)

My attached resume explains the commitment I have to the first three especially (hosting causes, raising over 4k for an event here, 3k there, etc)

some other honors: ap scholar with distinction, principals honor roll, outstanding citizenship, special achievement in social sciences

GPA uw: 3.3 (super weak, I know)
GPA w: 4

SAT: 1280/1910 gahhhhhhhhhhh
ACT: 29 don't laugh

what i want to know though is...how much do mid-year reports help out? my counselor will be talking about the promising trend in my progress...(1st semester senior grades will be a perfect 5.0)

I know my chances are not good at all. Do I stand a chance though- at all? Can I hope for anything? Is Gtown's admissions considerate to personal qualities and future promises?

Yeah, you’re rec letters and ecs are really good so you do stand a chance. You’re definitely not for sure in, but you do stand a shot.

With your scores and GPA I would be astonished to see you get in. Your soft items (recs from big cheeses; service; essays if they are as good as you say) would have to be interpreted by the right kind of admissions officer for you to overcome the numbers. Not sure what “made for politics” means – that can be interpreted in good & bad ways IMO. Having said all that: If you really want to go there, then pay the $70 and see what happens… why wonder for the rest of your life?

I’m gonna have to agree with Fever09 on this one. Especially since my counselor told me Gtown loves scores and everything else is after they get past the numbers.

I wish you luck since you seem to really want this (unless you make it sound so without it being true, qualifying the statement that you are “made for politics”).

P.S. Afterthought: if you can BS your way in, then you are indeed a gifted politician XD

Sorry-- I wrote this post really late and just realized how naive “made for politics” sounds.

My history teacher who has been teaching for 35 years has had one student who made it successfully into the US political realm as a Congressman I think. He wrote about seeing the same spirit and presence in me when I was in his class that can unite masses and unify voters.

My essay itself doesn’t focus on that nearly as much. The Gtown one is about this passion for pursuing justice. It’s become quite a beautiful piece as I incorporate this Lady Justice motif throughout the essay to show my dedication. Two main points are really how my own principles and goals line up perfectly with the traditions Gtown upholds and how my specific desire in education requires a setting like the Gtown community and its surroundings.

Again, I know my chances are really a crapshoot. I am hoping that I get an older admissions officer who reads this and feels sympathetic.

Still wondering: significance of Mid Year Report? Will such a high increase in my upward trend help a bit?

Having graduated from Georgetown and with fellow alums working as interviewers, I can say that your chances are a toss-up.

There’s an SAT range for a reason–not everyone has a finite 2100/2400 or a 2000/2400, etc. It’s a range and the Admissions Committee takes that into consideration.

I will say that having a minority Christian background (Orthodox Christian) is a plus, supported by the University’s commitment to maintaining an Orthodox Christian Fellowship club and Orthodox Chaplain on the staff. So that’s a plus.

Likewise, the Univ looks for potential leadership and it sounds as if you exhibit those qualities already. Most all of my classmates were leaders in high school, in a similar capacity.

Here’s one key question, which might be a bit retrospective, but anyway, what do you want to study? Political Sci/Government, I assume? I’d ensure that you convey that fully in your essay as the Univ wants to admit someone who not only is illustrative of a leader but focused on a specific field. Solid recs only substantiate that, rather than replace such conveyance.

Like I said lotr in the post preceding your’s.

My personal statement is more general (with small, vivid examples of my character in class) and really captures my voice and personality.

The second essay shows a strong passion for justice. I speak confidently about majoring in gov/poli sci and even discuss attaining a minor in Justice and Peace. It’s received a very good amount of reading and the feedback has been very, very good. Supposedly displays strong interests that have changed me and continue to aid my growth while also explaining a sincere interest in studying at georgetown.

Does the same person review everything in your application file? Will the person who reads my letter of rec from this religious figurehead also read my essay, seeing a strong fondness for the Jesuit principles present at Gtown? I think if this was so, the Admissions office would get a very good idea of who I am.

Again-- sorry for the repeats, but Mid-Year reports? Does anyone know how much they can help- especially with a solid backup/explanation from my counselor?
