The Age Old: UCSD vs UCSB

Whats up guys.

I'm a pending Microbio majors at both schools considering picking up a minor in math. I currently go to Rutgers University and as you can tell from the title I can't decide between UCSD and UCSB.

I feel like they are half and half of what I don't like at Rutgers. Which is specifically: ridiculous bio department, large classes, no one giving a damn, frat life ruling, few intelligent people, studying not being a priority, socializing not a priority at other times, and low ranked science departments and not enough funding for them.

I feel like UCSB might have the frat life I don't like. I want to study, drink occasionally, hike, surf, skate, do research etc all balanced, but it seems like UCSB might just be all about the partying. I will say the majority of my disappointment and depression at Rutgers comes from the fact of constantly being overwhelmed. I feel like UCSB won't have that as bad as here but UCSD will be just as hard if not harder than Rutgers. Rutgers might not be up there in rankings with them but **** our classes are hard.

Summary

UCSB- social life from what it seems
UCSD- no social life academics better job placement possible for bio fields.

What do you think?

Go to UCSD! I think it has the perfect balance of social life and academics for someone like you. There’s lots to do besides just frat life there while their bio programs are top notch. Most of my friends do seen like they’re having a good time at SB although they do party all the time.

I currently go to UCSB and just to clarify, only about 8-11% of UCSB students are involved with greek life! There’s a lot of SB Community College students that live in our neighborhood and they’re /usually/ the ones that party the most, but that’s not to say that UCSB students don’t party. It’s just that on top of studying we also party. Plenty of us are involved in honors programs, research, and student government, including myself, and we’re definitely able to balance it all with having a social life and studying. But, if all you really want is the prestige of being in UCSD’s biology program, by all means go to UCSD!

UCSD definitely has a better bio program that is cut throat with students getting into study groups just to destroy the curve. UCSD has no social life. Just read the reviews about UCSD on studenreviews and yelp…

and watch this video LOL

No brainer, UCSD.

Obviously UCSD.

@Eviity, you say “obviously UCSD” as if UCSD and UCSB were somehow not in the same league. In terms of rank, prestige, and academics, UCSB and UCSD are so comparable that you could seriously leave it up to a coin toss.

Scienceguy 1, I hope you picked the college that was the right fit for you and I hope that you didn’t listen to some of the uneducated and rhetorically biast opinions on this forum (e.g., Eviity). In reality, both school are top notch and you couldn’t go wrong with either.
