Waitlists and Deferrals are two different results as explained on the MT Forum earlier this year. As such, the master list has these grouped together but they are actually different things.

TotheStage - Soozie did indeed write at length about the difference between waitlists and deferrals earlier in the year. However, SOME schools seem to use the terms rather interchangeably. And some use one term, when according to Soozie's definition, they really mean the other!

I would definitely stay in touch with the school, ask what the odds are of moving off the list, and what the timeframe of the decision is likely to be.

Then, if it remains your first choice (or best option), stay in touch! 
Let them know you are still interested! Be aggressive,
just not stalker-ish :)

That is excellent advice if on a waitlist, about staying in touch with updates and also expressing interest in attending that program if accepted (if true).

Soozievt- CC probably needed a new, bigger, server due to the popularity of the the site, especially this time of year! I know I'm checking in more often than usual to see who's going where...If the growing list her is any indication, more people than ever are checking in for MT. Not to worry anyone, but I have a feeling that thanks to this site and more people than ever using the internet, next year's list will be even bigger! Unfortunately that may mean even more kids competing for the same small number of MT slots. Scary stuff!

Lexismom....yippee for your daughter! That is wonderful news. She has done really well overall in this process. She is fortunate to have a choice and even more lucky to get into one of her two favorites. I'm happy for you guys.

Melsmom, I think if we see more people on the MT Forum next year (and I hope more do post), it won't mean more are auditioning but simply that more people have found CollegeConfidential (and maybe even more come out of lurking status...come on you guys!) and it is one of the best resources right now in this specialized admissions area.

More people finding out about CC, means more people auditioning! Look what it's done for Otterbein, many have said that they never heard of the school for mt until reading CC. I must admit that I could not decipher heads or tails about which schools did MT from the collegeboard site, as it wasn't even a choice of majors to do a college search! I stick by my prediction that this field is going to get even more competitive, thanks in big part to CC (as if it isn't tough enough already to get into the BFA pgms!)

I guess I see it differently. I can't see getting interested in applying/auditioning for BFA programs in MT because I read a message board. I'd find the message board because I was already interested in applying and wanted to find out more.

The area I agree about, however, is that people learn a lot about the process here, as well as about various programs. Your example about Otterbein is very true, I agree. People will become more knowledgeable by reading the forum. They may discover programs, etc. But I don't think people will decide to apply for a BFA because they found CC but they found CC as they were looking to apply in the first place.

By the same token, MT is a popular "major" and the demand with the numbers of students who are interested is very high for so few slots. We do notice more programs emerging as well.

One more thing....I think it is really great that people find out about programs like Otterbein or Elon here when they never heard of them before visiting this site (giving myself as an example as to where I learned of those programs first). The way that is good is that before visiting this site, some students have only heard of schools like NYU, CCM, CMU, UMich, BOCO, etc. and this way, they have been opened up to way more possibilities and in some cases, more appropriate choices or maybe better odds for themselves. Same with learning about programs like Muhlenberg, American, Indiana, and so on. It is a good thing that way.

I first learned about or heard about Otterbein from a young woman -- now a professional actor -- who had attended for drama there and had also gone to the same arts hs as my D. I said "Otterbein? I have never heard of it" and she suggested that we check it out when the time comes for my D to look at colleges. She's an extremely good actor; we saw her in a local Equity production of "The Children's Hour." I would be interested to find out if any other kids from my D's high school got in there at any point, and especially if any got in for MT. The program is definitely on our radar.

I just realized that my earlier post could be read with a different meaning than I intended it to mean. I meant that I can't see people deciding to apply to college for musical theater IN GENERAL because they read this message board or that there would now be more kids going for BFA degrees after reading here. I thought they would read here because they were already gonna apply to go to college for MT.

However, I DO think that by reading here, they may discover a particular BFA program that they had not considered BEFORE reading CC. That's a real plus.

I hope I explained that better this time :D.

Lexismom...your story is a great case in point....you guys were looking for MT college admissions information....came here....were already gonna go this route, but did find a program you had never heard of , Elon (me either til CC), and this forum helped in that search (and hopefully in other ways too).

Congrats to all of you that have gotten acceptances so far. I hope the next two weeks bring more wonderful news.

After seeing the list, (I have been away from CC for quite awhile due to a very busy schedule) I realized that it has been 3 years since I was in your shoes, anxiously waiting to hear from the colleges my S applied to. I now anxiously await the acceptances of my students every year at this time.

I also know that the reality is that some will face disappointment in this process, but we old timers on CC have known of many who have risen above this and found satisfaction where ever they decided to "hang their hat" freshman year. Some re-auditioned the following year and found the second time a "charm". I truly believe that when one door closes another opens.
