The Classic Question: Am I Indian or Asian? With a Twist

Hey guys,

So I got in an argument with my family over this and I wanted to know your opinion.
On college apps, would I, an Indian (As in the Country), put down "Asian" as my race? And if it said "Asian (Including the Indian subcontinent)" would Pakistani go in the "Other" category? (My father's parents were from Pakistan). Additionally, does the difference between Indian/Pakistani significant when applying to colleges? Are Pakistani kids considered more URM (I know not really urm) than Indians, and if so, what is this margin? BTW I live in the US, but am of this background.

Thanks and PLEEZ respond ;)

I’m not sure it would make a difference.

On the Common App at least, it asks: “Which best describes your Asian background?” and you can check both India and Pakistan. Depending on one’s definition, the Indian subcontinent can include Pakistan.

While more Indians attend colleges than Pakistanis, there is not evidence to suggest that the applicant percentages are not proportional. Personally, I think the difference is not statistically significant.

bump, thanks @‌skieurope
