ani, Hindi? Don’t you guys get infraction for that? :p

Does it look like I care about receiving one? :P

I am a bit confused with the use of apne, hamare and uske.
Anyone care to explain or point to a hindi grammar site (in english)?

for example, what is the difference between vo apna seb kha raha he and vo uska seb kha raha he ?

lucy (i know u r not a female. hope u don’t mind),

Here is my guess:

apna == yours (respectful)
hamare == ours
uska == his/hers

Please blame translate.google.com for any errors. :p

Vo apna seb kha raha hai = He is eating his (his own) apple.
Vo uska seb kha raha hai = He is eating his (somebody else’s) apple.

Apna means “my own/mine” not “yours (respectful)”. I think you’re confusing “apna” with “apka”.

“apka” means yours (in a respectful way)

Having fun with Hindi lessons Luci?
(Sanskrit lessons were torturous sometimes, so I’ll completely relate to you if you reply in the negative;))
Of course he doesn’t! That’s what I’ve been calling him since I found out he wasn’t female. But then again, I did mention that I’d go on calling him that if he does mind just to annoy him, so maybe he thought it would be pointless asking me not to.
I never did call him Luci when I thought he was female remember? It always reminded me of that soppy soap Lucy Loves. :p

I really don’t. It is actually funny how things turned out, I did not expect at all the shortcut from luceverita to luci or lucy. Lucy is affectionate, I like it, but don’t tell my friends in real life
I still don’t understand, because the sentence “beta aur uski ma” means the child and his (own, not someone else’s) mother. so “uski” doesn’t necessarily mean somebody else’s. would you rather say beta aur apne ma ?

I think I found my Hindi teacher. :)

Lucy, I am sure our TiT friends will set you straight. You are miles ahead of me.

beta aur uski ma = Son and his (somebody else’s own) mother.
It’s like saying you and your mother in third person.

OK Now Don’t let the mods lock this thread too guys.

Yes, sorry, I should have asked these hindi questions on TiT 18

^^We’re not allowed to converse in our language like ani did in his post, but I highly doubt they’d grudge us providing translations to someone.

See luci, it depends on the way you’re using it.

Beta aur uski ma: the son and his own mother

Try to think of it like learning english grammar. It’s just like SAT WR section. The above sentence is in third person. Beta aur apni ma is grammatically incorrect because “apni” is used in first person while “beta” is third person (in this sentence).
So a sentence with “apni” would be like: mai apni ma ke saath jaoongi. (I shall come with my mother) (first person)
My friends tell me the most hilarious thing is when they teach their American friends how to swear in hindi. ;)

Be rest assured that the mods are not tracking this thread anymore. But well, if someone reports something, then they’re going to see the posts and the thread is going to be locked.

One month left for the boards.

Do yours start in Feb? Mine start on 1st March. Ughie.
How are you coping with Chem?
Just when I think the college stuff is packed and sealed and to be forgotten, financial aid forms and interviews decide to make an appearance. I hate this. I really do now.

Farewell on the 12th of Feb! Sari. Good heavens. I must not trip. I must not trip. I must not trip.
Most girls are already in starving till D-Day phase. I think I should forgo my daily chocolate till the 12th. If I can last till then. Thank god for genetics.

^ Exactly my feelings… I must not trip over that blasted sari!! I have mine on the 10th! And its such a weird feeling, walking around school nowadays, feeling that it’s actually over! I mean it’ll take a while for this feeling to sink in!

Boards… another battle waiting for us! And those beastly results coming out in the middle of boards… Honestly , how do they expect us to write a paper after being awake the entire night to see those darn results??
Damn this life!

Thank you Pixie, now it is clear.

and, what are boards ? some special exams?
Will you share pictures of the farewell event with all the girls wearing sari? And remember that you promised to post some pictures of you performing traditional Indian dance ?

I had my farewell yesterday.
Waste of time.

What perfectpixie said is true. I truly second that. I am in no mood to give interviews.

^^No problem!

Boards are the national final exams here. There are different boards one can be under. CBSE/ISC/ICSE. Then you have various state boards too.
LOL, are you crazy??!! I didn’t promise to post them! That’s like blatantly ignoring Internet protocol 101. I’d probably have PMed them discreetly. Btw, at that time I’d just agreed to humor you.
I didn’t get a video filmed after all, so I can’t do it atm ateast. If I get it done over the summer, I’ll make sure you get a copy okay?
Haha, all the girls wearing sari eh? ;)

:)

They cannot be wearing african boubou, can they ? ;)
