Must be quite competitive given the huge population. Any idea on the number of students taking this exam every year ?

well in india there are different boards like ICSE(national) and CBSE(national) and state boards for conducting exams. each have their exams taken on a particular day when students all throughout the country who are affiliated to the board take the exam. exempli gratia, my school is affiliated to ICSE and at the end of grade 10 and grade 12 we have to sit for the board exams. scores get pretty high in the boards, but not in school exams!! this year the ICSE grade 10 highest was 98.6 % and the grade 12 highest was 98.4 %. there are nearabout 200,000 students appearing for class 10 exams and 50,000 for class 12. all the numbers i gave are for ICSE board only. there is CBSE board too, as well as the state boards. in our state board, for example 850,000 appeared for class 10 and 450,000 appeared for class 12.

there you go, now you know everything about our schooling system!!!

@all I know its a bit naive of me to ask,but can we not customize or tailor make our common app?I mean I wanted a different common app short answer for Princeton only.Is it possible?

@alea: wouldn’t there be any hurdle with the visa? since it would be a tourist visa…

any of you know @esconie(or something like that) here?

meche: you can but this would involve making another commonapp from scratch. after you apply to all schools, you’ll have to delete this app and then start another one. Too much work for my taste

karan how much did you spend in sending the documents to the colleges by mail(apart from the common apps, like high school transcript and resume and stuff)?
it would give me a helpful estimate.
and how much(in india) is the fees of sat1 and sat2 and toefl? and how much does collgeboard charge for sending the scores to the colleges?
just tell me how much you spent in applying for us colleges as a whole.
sorry for this stupid post but i do need to know all these. considering ill be applying next year.
:)

Akashdip, I’ll be sending them online so I dunno about mail. And testing fee is 100$ for the SAT and almost a 100 for 3 subject tests.

so you are spending about 15000 bucks for applying???!!!

and how will you send the transcripts online?

Hey has anyone sent their sat scores to colleges yet? I used the 4 free reports i got with my november test, but havent got any confirmations yet…
Ive heard some colls take even weeks to process sent scores, is this true? Should I just send my scores in before my applications?

why am i the only junior year guy. why is everyone in their senior year and sending apps, pondering whether they will get in or not, etc etc. im missing all the fun!!!

akashdip- youre the only junior year guy here cuz not everyone is smart enough to get familiar with the process a year in advance…atleast i wish i had… youre saving yourself a lotta stress buddy
and u should feel relieved that you arent a part of all the madness yet, i wouldnt say its all fun :P

yeah right im trying to figure out what should i write in my common apps essay!![]()
anyway what stress are you talking about? it seems hordes of fun and excitement and tensions and stuff for me:)
hope you make it there though. best of luck:)

@veethiv: I do not think there should be any problem if you do it on a tourist visa. A student visa is required only if you take a credit earning course. You could even attend a one month long summer course at a college as long as it is not credit earning. So, taking a 4hours test does obviously not require a student visa.
Of course, you can get confirmation of this at your local US consulate, but I am quite confident that the above is true because I attended a college summer course on a tourist visa which was delivered to me after I explained the purpose of my trip to te USA to the local US consular office.

Yes, you can do that. Once you have submitted your first app (you must submit at least one application before this feature becomes available to you), you can create up to 10 alternate versions of your common app and choose which college belongs to which version of your application. They will retain all your basic information (identity, family etc…) but you can upload totally different essays and writings.
On your common app, click on the link “instructions” which is the left top link and then on “application versions” to find out the exact procedure. (you will have to logout and open the url https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Default.aspx?allowcopy=true and login again)

^^I have. I used up my 4 free reports, and added four more. You’ll get your confirmations after you give ALL the tests you register for (SATI and SAT II) and recieve the results. Do you have any pending tests?
I think sending them early does no harm. That would prolly be best.

Sorry. That was for Shreya. Got the pages muddles up ![]()
@Akash- seriously, be relieved! i’m wishing i started this in 11th too, would have had it much better
:)

akashdip: ur not the only one! many of the CC users from India are preparing for this Dec 3 SAT (one of them being me!) … btw, @akash, whats ur SAT score?

Why is there such a difference between the number of exam takers in grade 10 and 12. Are there so many HS dropouts ?

Lack of infrastructure and lack of quality teachers. These are the biggest factors in reduction of numbers. The fees however are very very low. They are almost non-existence. Most students come from a poor financial background where an extra hand translates more money than education (paradox, mainly because there aren’t enough opportunities to get acquainted with further options).

Buuuut … things are changing quickly. I leave it to you to find the same facts in 5 years :)
