While I agree Gtech can be compared to MIT and Stanford solely on engineering, you can’t bring Duke to the equation because Duke is #30 in engineering. Also if you mean in general (overall program offerings)…then I highly suggest that Duke is far ahead of Gtech.
While Duke has a percent admission rate of near 24%…Gtech is over 50%. Also the rankings you see on USnews and all are based on research AND student academics with respect to offerings and atmosphere. Everything is taken into the equation to give the universities their rankings. Gtech is low on rankings because it cannot accomodate to a greater degree as other top privates and publics can accomodate. Some publics can still be pretty selective unlike Gtech and even though they may end up entering in 80% of students from instate, the competition is pretty tough so don’t downgrade publics. Essentially, top publics can be quite accomodating and are like privates where you get a good bit of greek life and attention. Nothing can be deduced from being either private or public…
However, Gtech is a pretty good place to do engineering. However, its low selectivity could be overwhelming if you think you want to get attention.

@ +ve- GT has a very reputed international relations school as well. True that its real strength is its engineering division but its got other schools as well. Just like MIT is mainly known as a tech school it is at the top for almost thing I have checked into. Apart from the sciences and engineering at MIT, the Economics dept is the best in the world as well. Not many know this and when I tell them this they say I am bluffing…

Friends ,you all seem right … But all I wanted to convey was - You cannot just look at National Ranking and say one school is better than other for engineering … And also I just wanted to let everybody know that Georgia Techs engineering us considered equally prestigious to that of MIT and Stanford … And as all of us would know , the only negative is its 50% admittance rate :)

@phr34k : Hehe But seriously what do you mean by culture ? (Actually I am very serious , because I really want to know more about GTech) !! Thank you :)

Hi Guys.I am the parent of an Indian kid.My daughter is applying for Fall 2012 in Biotech/Bio chem major. She got acceptance in Rutgers-NB in EA.Her stats 2260 SAT.Good EC’s I love this forum and great posts by some very smart kids!! Congrats to all of them

Great news Manrosh. Likely letters and acceptance letters should soon be pouring in after the winter season to many of the people of this forum who are anticipating their invitations anxiously.

@ +ve- MIT’s unofficial motto is “Work hard and Play harder”! So the culture at MIT is much crazier. And also MIT is known as one of the best schools for partying (kinda sounds untrue but is true)…

@ texaspg;- As I mentioned she wants to do Bio Technology/Biochemistry
So far she intend to apply to WPI, Wisconsin-Madison,Virginia Tech,Univ of Georgia,Purdue,Texas A&M,Indiana Bloomington and of course Rutgers for which she already received admission.Though I can afford it will reduce my burder if she can get a scholarship
Any suggestions on any other colleges most welcome

manrosh - most of the schools on your list seem to be public schools which don’t officially give aid to international students at the undergrad level. You can only look for the lowest cost tuition options. There are several private schools mentioned on this thread, mostly ivy league. Have you looked into any of them?

Texaspg;- IVY schools -not many with Biotech/Bio Chem majors. Not sure of Schloarships
Can you suggest some particularly with BioTech/Biochemistry major.Hope I am not troubling you. Thanks in advance

Biochemistry is interdisciplinary which is usually not listed as a separate major but is available in most places that offer biology and chemistry. So although it is not listed, you can go to any college pretty much and choose biology or chemistry and fashion it to be a biochemistry major.

Biotechnology is a kind of in between field and it is quite possible most colleges in US call it bioengineering. I studied engineering in India where my college was old fashioned and called our degrees B.E. while everyone else who came in later were issuing BTech. When I first came to US, I was happy to see all US colleges called it BE and no one called them a degree in technology.

hey guys, did anyone here give their SAT1 this december?
damn, i was terrible!
so now i need help? how can i increase my vocab for i’ve like 3 months?
thanks

Just wanted to let you guys in on something interesting: Over 81% of ALL undergrads at my Ivy have sought mental counseling. The wait time for an appointment is an average of 3 months! As you guys await your Ivy ED decisions, keep in mind that getting into one of these schools brings only very temporary happiness. True happiness comes from being able to study what you’re passionate about while in the midst of truly close friends - things you can get at ANY university.

^81%???
Still, if I get in Imma be the 19%. And I could be a pseudo-psychiatrist, reduce the waiting list and charge them 100$ a session. Great idea to pay my way through college.
