The MOB/MOG Dress Extravaganza!

I was in a wedding in the early 90’s, in early October. I was a little surprised the bride picked black velvet bridesmaid dresses, but I was happy with the choice. It felt too early for velvet.

I was surprised. The MOB wore a long velvet dress and at least 3 guests. I thought it was a little early also.

My niece and her friends are quite fashionable.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the huge clunky white shoes with fancy dresses. It was a look.

My nephews wife and I had basically the same dress. Except she bought hers at Target.

I think I mentioned that this wedding was a two night affair. The first night was dinner, pretty small. 40 or so people. The next night was a sunset cruise. The second night the dress code was festive, bright colors encouraged. Maybe 100 people the next night.

It was interesting how the dress code was interpreted.

People came in dresses, men in sport coats. Traditional wedding attire. FOB and the FOG both wore shorts, Hawaiian shirts and sneakers. The MOB wore a green satin jumpsuit. The MOG wore a dress, similar to the one she wore the first night. The fashionable girls wore long dresses with the clunky sneakers. A couple came in matching Hawaiian dress and shirt. Straw hats. Linen suit with a Hawaiian shirt. Tight pants, sport jacket and loafers, no socks. One woman came in jeans with a dressy blouse.

It was all over the board and actually very interesting how the dress code was interpreted. It was quite fun.

At my nephew’s wedding, they had a basket of gold flip flops in three sizes for the dancing, like the ones below. They were surprisingly comfortable so I brought mine home.

IMO, velvet like this or this is never out of season, but that Target dress* doesn’t even look good on the model. Velvet is a luscious fabric not to be toyed with. It makes an extravagant statement in the right style on the right body. Unfortunately, it also adds pounds, so it is hard to wear well once we start getting a little “curvier.”

*Velour is not velvet, but we all know that.

Pretty positive this was the dress the MOB wore. In dark berry

Gorgeous dress but IMO way too early in the season for that material, at least where I live. The temps fluctuate too much this time of year here and the fabric would look too “wintery” here (mid-Atlantic) in early October.

I love that dress…it’s a fall color for sure…but this was an early fall wedding. Not sure how that fit in with the dress code defined…but whatever.

My ex sil has never let something like a dress code (that she set :joy:) deter her from wearing what she wants.

The dress was very pretty but the dark berry felt Christmasy to me.

IMO it was better than the satin moss green jumpsuit, which was the second night outfit, which didn’t fit well and wrinkled terribly.

That’s beautiful!

So beautiful!

And…I think I own the same dress! One of my favorites!

Soon-to-be MOG here. DS and his bride are going to a Caribbean resort for a small, immediate-family-only ceremony in January/February and have a summertime party/reception. Plans are still developing but, as I understand things now, they will have no attendants and the ceremony will be on the beach. FDIL will wear a bridal gown and DS plans to wear a linen suit sans tie. I’m not getting any helpful color or style feedback from the bride or her mom since they’re still working on details.

My question to this wonderful group is: Where will I find an MOG dress for a beach wedding in the dead of winter??!! Suggested sources will be appreciated. It seems things will come together soon but, with the holidays looming, I’d like to get a head-start on my shopping!

My go-to for dress shopping is Nordstrom’s Rack. I buy what appeals and then take things back that don’t fit or aren’t as expected. I suspect they may have sone suitable options. Their prices are nice and they have a return window, within which you can return at either NRack or Nordstrom’s.

Look now while summer items are being cleared out? Rely on one of the reliable online sources of “gently used” designer wear like Real Real?

Or maybe look at designers like Lily Pulitzer that have “summer wear”

Check beach-y brands like Lily Pulitzer (suggested above) and Tommy Bahama. Nordstrom carries both. Also, Farm Rio makes fabulous maxi dresses.

Here is an example of a TB one:

There used to be cruisewear sections in the stores in winter - not everyday summer wear but resort-type clothes. Of course that was when people dressed for dinner on the boats so I’m not sure if the stores still stock such clothes?

At any rate, I don’t think it will be hard to find such clothes online at a minimum.

I’d look at Poshmark. Good place to find out of season clothing.

The other option would be to wait until January when resort lines come out.

In the past, Lilly Pulitzer has a big sale right after new years. Great place to find dresses. They just had their after summer sale, I picked up a few pieces.

@Panhandlegal1 - I love Tommy Bahama, but I find their dresses to be exceedingly vanity sized, so if you can’t try on and are just ordering online, I stronger suggest going down at least one size.

I’ve found dresses of all types/seasons on Amazon and the return procedure (in my area) has gotten so much easier (just drop off at UPS or Whole Foods).
