One more thing (gosh I should go study). In China and India, you take a standarized test...and nothing else. And you get into whatever college your score qualifies you to go to. The colleges don't have individualized tests.

IIT also stands for Illinois Institute of Technology, a mediocre school compared to the other one, and with very easy admissions.

i thought the uc system was going to have their own set of tests in place of the sat's but i think that was one of the reasons that prompted the change in the new sat.

"Indian Institute of Technology...#1 tech school in the world...ahead of MIT, Caltech, Stanford, etc"

??????????????? Since when?

That's totally wrong on more than one level...

A) there are seven IIT's in india.. much like the UC system, i believe it is public as well

B) their miniscule acceptance rate is misleading.. it is only so low because they have like 1 gajillion (quote me on that) kids applying every year. lower acceptance rate doesn't make it a better school.

C) they have limited budgets. India government can't afford water and basic health care.. they can't compete with elitist rich american private schools. more funds= more resources & opportunities =better school

D) it was 9 or so american schools that helped create the research facilities at the IITs......... i'm sure they'd plunk down the dough to build facilities that are better than their own. (sarcasm)

Owned.

America keeps it gangsta.

However, I'd agree that it's probably harder to get into an IIT, simply because of the mass competition. But.. though this is a hardcore generalization.. it's a LOT of work to go anywhere in India, like you have to take thousands of classes and do crazy well on those tests to compete, so the top people generally have NO time for extra curriculars.. so.. good luck going ivy with 1600/2400/4.0 (or equivalent) & no life.

Unfortunately, though I'm all about saying MIT, stanford, caltech own IITs,....

IITs probably annihilate Penn E. :(

neostrife have you read 5 point someone?

Ergh. I hate this talk of the infamous "AI"...there's a book out there somewhere, like one of the best admissions books out there that nobody has ever heard of (on this board), it's called "College Admissions Trade Secrets"...it spends a WHOLE chapter talking about how AI is only an index used for athletic admits...somebody please read it!!!!!

it spends a WHOLE chapter talking about how AI is only an index used for athletic admits

I believe this is wrong ... what I remember from one of the admission books is that the AI index was CREATED to support the admissions process of IVY league athletic applicants ... but since it's creation it's use (or other school specific similar models) has widened to be used in the regular application process.

HOwever, the AI along is only one element (at most) in selective college admissions. Each individual school seems to weigh different elements more or less depending on the type of student they want to attract: a school, especially one in the Ivy League, cannot be said as less selective because its expectations for the AI index is lower.

I haven't, but I heard a little about it. Maybe its message will hit home a little bit so some people can actually enjoy their youth without sacrificing success.

someone explain what exactly AI is please.

AI means Athletic Index.

go see http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/ news/Athletic_Admissions.pdf

btw, guys, you have to keep in mind that what admissions officers say, know.. IS true... you could cut the applicant pool in half to the ivies and still get the same diversity/caliber, i'd say. so, really, we just need more really prestigious collleges, imo.

i may be exaggerating a little, but then again, maybe not.

secondly, wasn't sempiturn scorned on like every board? didn't he/she diss every single ivy/top school in some shape or form? "i visited and there's nothing special.. blah blah"

in any case, i hear about columbia a ton (everyone here applied there)... and they have a super low acceptance rate, too...impossible to get in RD

broken link

sorry Canadia 1.

here is it:
http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/news/Athletic_Admissions.pdf

AI (Academic Index consisting of GPA or rank SATI and SATII) is used for athletic recruit admissons in Ivy League. However, AI is calculated for all students, and athletic recruits for a particular Ivy school can only differ from average AI of that school by a set standard deviation. For example, according to a former Harvard admissions officer, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth are in a higher AI tier than the rest of the Ivy schools. Accordingly, athletes recruited to HYPD must have a higer AI than those recruited to Brown, Columbia, Cornell and Penn.

thanks dudes.

UPenn is AWESOME. The FIRST Ivy on my list, for sure. It's also very selective, but not completely out of reach for people who aren't olympic athletes (they go to Harvard......)

I love how people call Penn a safety when it is only second to princeton of the ivies with respect to the percentage of students in the top 10% of its class.

i dare anyone to argue that penn isn't prestigious or is a bad school relative to any other school (or ivy) in the nation (and for that matter, the world!). please. i dare you.

oh, and just to be anal about something, an_obs: you mean "by one standard deviation" not "a set standard deviation."

Neostrife: "they have limited budgets. India government can't afford water and basic health care"

I really take exception to that statement....we can definitely afford water and basic healthcare.....The reason why "India govt cannot afford..." is that we have a mixed economy which mixes CAPITALISM with SOCIALISM...... i know US has Social Security things but we are a developing country....we have 3 times the population of the US..... an can u say that EVERYONE is US has water and basic health facilities..... with such atrocious prices...i wonder...IIT's.... its not only mass competition...but tough competition.....ive seen my friends studying......minimum of 8 hrs (of productive studying) per day.....IIT's are the best in the world.....MIT Stanford own IIT's ????....next u would say that IU Bloomington owns Penn.....and someday.....Zimbabwe owns the States..... There is no competition when it comes to the academics at IIT's...... yes quality of life and opportunities might not be as vast as MIT/Stanford.....and please...change your perception of India.....it's not a country where every other person has a begging bowl in his hand.....check out NASA and other highly technical companies/org.......see the percentage of indians working there......

Please remember...I am not criticising the US.....it's a land of opportunities...i am against some &%*&^$ opinions which some people (esp neostrife) have.....

that's why socialism is bad
