file it in the garbage can. Your local high school's National Honor Society is more legit.

My mom works in admissions at Duke and she takes National Society of High School Scholars pretty seriously, and not NHS...i mean EVERYONE is in NHS

It's the other way around.

To be in NSHSS, you need to be a somewhat decent student and pay $45.

To be in NHS, you need to have a 4.0 average (at least in my school) and do a lot of community service.

You are definitely mixing them up.

It DOES offer simple scholarships that are included when you sign up. It also offers seminars and summer programs.
You can also put it on your college application.
I was skeptical at first, but it was worth it!

NSHSS pays your school for a mailing list of the top 15th percentile (or something like that). Your school makes money. Then they solicit you with promises of "this will boost your resume".

Total rubbish IMHO. Since it's non-selective marketing-heavy underpinnings is widely known to ANYONE in college admissions, it's worthless or worse: an indication of the student's straw grasping.

EDIT: if you get a solicitation from "Who's Who in American High Schools" or something like that to be included in their big book, file it right next to the NSHSS app. They belong in the same landfill.

Save the $45 and spend it on an additional college application or on a nice college sweatshirt from the college that you plan to attend.

If you dont intend on taking advantage of the scholarships, don't do it. Otherwise it's not that much for the oppertunities

^they only gave out like, 40k in scholarships last year while they raked in 3.1million in those 45 dollar fees. NSHSS also has a facebook group that is full of robots that post similar comments ever 48 hours or so. They all say Im in! or stupid stuff like that, I tried to take it down about a year ago, but I got banned. If anyone else will put some significant effort into this, we should do a CC crusade against NSHSS on facebook.

I'm just saying it's not like it's a huge fee to get in..and then place finalist for a certain scholarship on a resume. If you don't fill the forms out it won;t do anything for you and it is a waste..for most people it is.

OK, I'm not going to lie. I'm a member of NSHSS, and I paid the $45. They do have member-only scholarship opportunities and legitimate activities/conventions.

I would recommend you sign up, but only if you have $45 that you can blow. It's a nice line on your resume, you get a few opportunities, and, hey, you get a t-shirt.

BUT, if you think $45 is too much, don't worry about it. It won't be to your detriment to not be a member of NSHSS.

well my schools name is on the bottom of the envelope
and my grades are pretty top notch so
should i pay the $60.00
or like someone said "throw it in the trash"-paraphrasin ofc
?????

Green Tea: If not the trash can, do you have a bird cage that needs lining? Or how about by the fireplace to start your next log?

Of course your HS name is there. Do this as a project and report back to CC: ask your Principal how much NHSSS pays your school for the mailing list. What does THAT tell you?

Do you think the Nobel commission pays scientists associations for lists of potential nominees? C'mon

If you want to use it to increase your chances at a top university, then throw that letter in the birdcage. If you want a nice certificate to show your parents and have them stroke your ego, then god damn it, pay the app fee and do what your heart desires.

I agree with Tboonepickens. NSHSS is a for-profit scam under the cover of legitimacy. It detracts from the cohesiveness of one's application and it certainly won't get you into college by any means.

Like I said: an AWARDS organization that PAYS your school district for the names and addresses of the top 15% in order for them to send their mail solicitations -- wow. how special.
