Ok, so I get this letter in the mail saying that I have been nominated for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars. I would accept the invitation, except I have to pay a one-time $45 membership fee. Has anyone heard of this, and is it even prestigious? Or is it just another application filler, like National Honor Society and Who's Who?

Do not waste your money. It is not worth a cent to colleges.

Waste of time/money

Since when is national honor society an "application filler"? As far as i know, in NHS you ACTUALLY do things.

I believe he meant National Honor Roll.

Yea I just got that mail today too! I was also gonna ask around to see if it was worth it or not....

not NHS, but National Society of High School Scholars. I got that too and I'm pretty sure they're different

NHS usually sends out mail during the first semester.

yea i got the national society of high school scholars...should i sign up?

I pretty much wasted money joining NSHSS. I honestly don't think you do anything, although you have the opportunities to attend conventions and such but thats even more money!

Sorry this is a little off-topic, but what exactly does National Honor Society do? In my school we just sign up and pay the membership fee and that's it... is it different elsewhere in the country?

really? For our NHS, we have a ton of service requirements. It's basically a prestigious community service group with a rigerous application.

We do, too. There are a bunch of community service activities that are set up once we get in, not to mention tutoring hours as a way to give back to our hs...
Is the NSHSS like the Who's Who of High school students?

yeah, pretty much.

it's a legit organization, but of little value to your resume

spend ur 45 dollars elsewhere, like on SAT prep or other prep that would be more useful to the college admissions process.

For our NHS, we have to have a certain community hour in order to get in, but otherwise we don't do a thing.

wow. we get kicked out if we don't do a certain number of CS projects.

Yeah, I got that thing in the mail a few days ago. They said it would be a great asset to my application...but seeing as I've already applied and gotten in...I spent my $45 on a new pair of jeans :-)

i got an invitation:
"your outstanding academic acheivement has quailified you for membership in the national society of high school scholars..."

should care about this and does it matter.
and is it an invitation to a dinner like the ETT awards?

" During this important time in ur academic career, i wish to congratulate you on your oustanding academic acheivement."

significant yes or no
important yes or no
