I suppose there’s no reason to hold back now, so I’ll say it- I believe my chances are at a firm 50/50.In all modesty, my profile and essay were great, I put a lot of heart into both and spent months working on them (The profile had been almost a year in the making. I started it when I was studying in Russia, back in 2013). My SAT falls into the mid-average range. While all of these factors are positive, one thing has me hesitant, my GPA.
As I said on my first post, it’s really different here. Getting a 4.0 GPA is near impossible since unlike in the US, students here need to study ALL disciplines, regardless of their personal interests. With that said, I suffered in the beginning due to my lack of the Portuguese language, consequently my grades fell to the same fate. I managed to pick myself up along the following years but not to an American student or UF standard. Much to my dismay, GPA is the most valued aspect of the decision, which strikes down the other points I’ve obtained.
The only solace I truly have is the fact that I’m an international full-pay student. They’re good for diversity and revenue, which isn’t a bad thing to admit. Hopefully that’ll weigh in my favor, but you can see why this wait is affecting me particularly.
I don’t agree with @chicacademy My son was told FSU and UF do not take many applicants OOS so his chances were slim. He did, however, get into FSU but UF we would be shocked! Good luck!
@NYIslekid well yes, that’s what everyone is told. However, on last year’s thread of results the people that posted from out of state were all acceptances, and some with oddly low scores. Just trying to be optimistic!
I’m paranoid bc when some people took the survery it congratulated them and some it didnt so i feel it may have some significance… can someone who had the congratulations call?
@Hi1997 No one in this thread got a congratulations after completing the survey. Where did you hear people getting a congrats? That survey is from 2014; meaning it’s for last years admitted students.
I don’t think the survey has any meaning. UF has always been consistent with letting everyone know on the second Friday of February without any early release glitches
Boy this has caused quite a stir, huh? Just leave it to side and look at your calendar. We’re down to those last three days. UF’s facebook account has been ominously quite lately, and not counting down as it was doing before. I wonder…If we’re going to remember this short period of anxiety after we’ve all finished university? Hm…
Oh yes, I’ve been meaning to ask you all about a suggestion I had earlier. Would any of you be willing to share your essays for the future prospective Gators? I was thinking about making a new thread -before- the decisions come out. (It shouldn’t really matter if the essay belongs to someone who passed or not, I believe). I personally would’ve loved to see a thread like that when I was applying, but… Just want to see if you’re all up to it before doing anything it
@chicacademy I’m from NY. Probably not going to get in, considering I got deferred from FSU. Not that big a deal though, I already got into my top (Penn State).
@chicacademy 3.1GPA (not sure what my UF GPA is) and 29ACT. Essay was decent, but my extracurriculars are excellent. Leadership roles, community service, varsity sports (captain of one), and multiple activities I’ve been doing for 12+ years.
I hate to bring people down but UF acceptances can be a total crap shoot depending on where you live and what your stats are relative to others in your cohort. An example: In the next county over, kids were getting in to UF with only a few AP classes and none actually passed the AP exams because the high schools are just very poor and they cannot attract great AP caliber teachers. In our county, kids who have 8-12 AP’s and even AP scholar with distinction who also got into Cornell, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt- did not get into UF. I truly believe they have some sort of quota system and I believe they MUST take OOS and international students to keep $$ coming in since in state tuition is so low here. Just an observation.
First off, I am an instate legacy student. I was accepted to LSA at Michigan and the Honors program there, but I do not live in Michigan. With that said, I did see that message on the tuition payment screen, but I will 100% assure you that it has nothing to do with this year’s acceptance. The link is for tuition payment, why would a prospective student have paid tuition? Don’t let that link worry you, guys!
I can also speak on the Honors college at UF. Whoever mentioned the minimum UF GPA of a 4.0, and a SAT of 2070 OR 33 ACT is correct. If you meet those requirements you will receive an invitation to apply to the Honors college. If you do not meet these requirements, you may still apply by filing a petition and seeing if they will allow you the chance to apply. Roughly 1,400 students are invited to join every year and maybe a couple hundred successfully petition. From there, you submit an essay and it is looked over by the students and staff of the Honors college. Roughly 50% of applicants are then accepted. If you do not make it in before your freshman year, you may apply once more after the fall semester.
Somebody also mentioned that the Honors college was “bad”. I think it is a HUGE advantage for prospective students. A normal gen ed class may have 200 students. An honors class may have 25. The experience is much more personal. Professors are more likely to have a feel for the type of person you are. Because of that, they can give you more personalized instruction and are more likely to help with Recs when the time comes for grad school.
Honors students get first choice of classes, even before athletes and upperclassmen. This allows them to have better class times and more desirable subject areas. This is a huge advantage.
The Honors dorms are nice. They provide a good studying environment and a less hectic dorming experience. Personally, I will look elsewhere for my first year, but the Honors dorm may appeal more to others.
Hey guys… first time posting on CC. I’m OOS – from Maine – and super nervous about decisions. I loved UF when I visited so I’m hoping for an acceptance! Best of luck to you all!
