The "OH GOD PART xyz HASN'T ARRIVED YET AND I'M SCARED!" thread

I talked to my teacher and I trust that he sent it. However, I am starting to doubt my printer of all things. I printed out mailing labels, and toner can scratch of pretty easily. Maybe the address was scratched off? or maybe I got the address wrong? I am PARANOID right now.

I wondered the same thing. The envelope seemed to smudge the print. That's why I decided to collect all the forms my from teachers and counselors and send them at one time (in one large DHL envelope). Ah...The relief of tracking =). Don't worry, the post office is probably bombarded with millions of letters going to different colleges all at the same time! They probably take about 2-3 times as long as normal with all the EA applications. Anyway, I sympathize with you--I'd be just as nervous!

I don't know if this is a good or bad thing for me, but my teacher had written a recommendation for a girl applying for Stanford EA and her rec hasn't gotten there either. He says this only means that UCSD mail (which is next door to my school) is slow like always. He was warned not to use it by other teachers because of how slow it is. So I just checked the website, does MIT only update their tracking once per day? and does anyone know what time the admissions office closes? From what I remember, I saw admissions officers still working until about 5 PM during the summer.

^ yeah...it seems like the Stanford people are having a very tough time w/ their recs getting to Stanford. hm.
Our school has a system where the counselors get VERYTHING and send it out as one packet (the counselor's form, transcript and any recs that we need) I think this system works well for situations such as this.

anyone call or email the admissions office about this issue?

I tried to call yesterday after school, but since I'm in California, and they close at 5pm eastern, I wasn't able to reach them. So I woke up early before school and called this morning. The person on the line asked for my name/birthday, and told me to hold for a few minutes. Then she came back and said that they never recieved my school report, and asked if I could fax it.

After a long and crazy day, I finally found my counselor and had him fax my transcript and report. He told me that he called to confirm, and that they got it. No update on the MyMIT page, though.

/end stressful day

I just did. They said everything was caught up in two weeks, so they gave me the fax number (617) 258-8304 so my teacher could fax the recommendation... so much for asking for his recommendation back. Never trust college mail offices... I wonder how this affects the admissions process.

Vu - what did you say about the thing? They said that it should have been in by the 18th? (two weeks from due date?) cause that's todya and one still isn't processed.

The admissions told me that they got to everything two weeks from the date sent, they're up to date, and everything is flowing smoothly again in the office. I hope my admissions process isn't affected.

Oh crap. If they haven't gotten my teacher's letter of rec yet, that's not good. And we don't have school next week, so i'm gonna have to call him next week then, after I email and hear back from MIT.

does anyone know how long it takes mit to receive rec letters, transcripts, etc and then make mymit say "processed"?

Even during one of their busy weeks, it took only 2 weeks for recs to be processed; at least that's what was said on the phone. My experience is that when I sent it through regular mail (not my school mail), it was there and processed in a week and a half.

Okay... it was faxed on Friday during business hours, and my counselor said that they received it, but I never got confirmation on the MyMIT page. And then a few hours after it was faxed, I got a reply to a previous email I sent to the admissions office saying:

Thank you for your email. We do not have your transcript or secondary school report. Please have
your guidance counselor fax it to us at 617-258-8304.

What the HELL? They have my school report and transript. I just saw it go through the fax machine. Do they just let stuff pile up in the fax tray? And not touch it until Monday?

Argh... frustration
-Oren

They probably don't sort the stuff over the weekend. Also, it takes time for them to update their system (thus the "processing" stage). Think about it, around 10000+ applicants: each with 2 or more letters of recommendation, a secondary-school report, a transcript, 1 or 2 score reports, and additional material. That amounts to more than 60000 letters! Must be time-consuming to systematically organize and file each letter or fax. I'd give them another week before writing to their admissions department. Worst case, they don't recieve it. You can then have it faxed with attention to someone who's waiting for it in the admissions office. I'd just give them another week. If I'm not mistaken, many applicants last year experienced the same delays.

Does anyone know how a faxed recommendation 3 or so weeks after the deadline (tommorow) will affect my application review?

Auto rejection for everyone in your state, along with a customized rejection letter that taunts you for having your recommendation faxed in so late, saying that it's the only thing that kept you out. Then they publish your name in The Tech for the annual "Kids whose recommendations came too late" column, and let everyone who applied from your school know it was you that got them rejected.

Sheesh...

snorts HAHAHAHA ohhhhhhhh man.

Everyone in your state rejected? Gosh that's harsh :P

You guys are crazyyyy, maybe you should have sent these things in earlier if you wanted to get into MIT so badly :)
My school report/2nd teacher rec got sent in a week.5 before the deadline and was processed on the 3rd of november, if that helps. Don't forget that the closer to the deadline you submit something, the longer it's gonna take to get processed.

We didn't have control over teacher recs.

Sure you do, you stress to your teach the importance of sending it in early, and then follow up with gentle reminders every week until they send it in.

My problem is he did. They just didn't get it. Lol.

I guess i'm gonna drive down to school soon and have him fax it.
