The Superscore Idea

So, many schools are asking for the scores of all SAT tests taken. Essentially this creates the superscore which adds up the highest result from each section.

But, do your lower scores then have any effect at all on your app? And say you perform poorly in one area (due to stupid mistakes) of the SAT but this is strengthened out with an AP score of 5 in that area as well as SAT IIs and class grades, then how does your poor score look in the eye of the admissions officer?

I'm just wondering if the low score will ever impact your app negatively if all the above can occur?

Thanks!

I’d like to know this too! My Math Score fell in 100+ pts in my second sitting because of stupid mistakes! How badly does this hurt me? I got 800 the first time.

Bumpp

No, they only look at the highest scores across all testing dates. There’s no reason why they wouldn’t, higher SAT scores = higher rankings.

I did worse on all of the subjects for the October SATs. How bad is this, especially for schools that want all scores reported such as Stanford.

Yea, what about SAT II Subject Tests? Does Stanford require all? I got 800, 770, 750, 720, 700, 700, 670 (2 are retakes). Should I send all, or just submit top 3? Idkkkkkk

Stanford and several other top tier schools are very clear about requiring all scores. I don’t think anyone know for sure what can or would happen if an applicant purposely omit some scores. I usually say why even risk it and not being fully honest about yourself when you are specifically asked to do something. Bottom line is not to be too obsessed with test scores. If your best set of scores is decent, you are in the game. It is very unlikely that one or two lower scores will destroy your chance.

Each school decides for itself score policy. The more selective, the less flexible. That said, scores are only one part of the package. My personal take on scores is thus: scores below a threshold set at each school help cull the pile of apps quickly. Above that threshold, everything else gets looked at.
