The University of Texas Dorms

Although Jester isn’t super close to the engineering quad, Jester houses an engineering academic community center [url=<a href=“Undergraduate Education”>Undergraduate Education]Academic Community Center in Jester West/url

Don’t get too worried about dorm location. For a school with 50,000 students, the UT campus is very compact. It is not a hardship to walk from any of the dorms to any of the academic buildings.

All of the dorms are quiet compared to West Campus. Even though Jester tends to be a social hub for 1st year students, it is not real loud. Parties are held off campus, not in dorm rooms.

As far as cleanliness goes, my son preferred the community bathrooms at Jester because they are cleaned daily. Bathrooms can get pretty gross if your room/suitemates are slobs (or binge drinkers).

Wow. I can’t believe this page has gotten this big. 73,000+ views.

I think the housing information comes out in a month or so - good luck everyone!

whats honors like?

About a month or 2 ago, the system allowed you to choose your honors dorm preference, but I don’t see that option anymore. I wonder why they got rid of it.

Are you in honors? If so and you want to live in ABC, you should call. Maybe the dorms are full.

Have freshman gotten their roommates/housing? I’m a sophomore and I dont have a roommate in a double with community bath

^Nope, haven’t gotten mine yet.

I don’t think they come out until July; maybe even the end of July!

I applied for housing on April 1st, and the lady at the division of housing told me that I’m waitlisted for housing. Can anyone else that is in a similar position to me tell me my chances of getting on campus housing?

At orientation this week, they said dorm room assignments will BEGIN to come out July 15. They will not all be released at once.

Yes this is how it worked last year. You can still change your preferences on buildings and roommates until early July. Last year I went to orientation at the end of June/beginning of July, and I got to check out the different dorms around campus before I decided on which one to finalize in my preferences. Once they are locked, the school makes their assignments and they are released on mid-late July, over the course of a few days.

^Even though I doubt it, do you still think it would be possible to change roommate preferences even after the deadline this year (July 1st).

The page online locks down, so you’d have to do it in person at the housing office, and even then it might be too late. Their system starts matching people and assigning rooms, and once that’s set in store you can’t change it without a whole lot of trouble at the beginning of the year, which means you, your roommate, your preferred roommate, and his roommate would all have to reach a mutual room-switching agreement. It’s more trouble than it’s worth IMO.

One of my friends did get a switch because he had just a horrible roommate, but he had actual complaints rather than just preference.

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

On the topic of the dorms themselves:

I’m going to be in Jester this year, and I’ve heard a lot about it, mostly about it being a hellhole. Honestly, it doesn’t sound that bad at all to me. Is it just me, or is Jester actually a ****ty dorm?

It’s not that bad at all. Really. You could get lucky and be one of the people who gets a room with a connecting bath and movable furniture. Otherwise, you are stuck with your room layout being almost entirely static, you won’t be able to move your beds around, etc.

It doesn’t smell anymore like some old reviews claim, and it doesn’t get super loud or rowdy or anything. Sure, if your neighbors are fun loving people you all could have a little get together in somebody’s room, but it’s not going to keep you up until 5am on a school night. (You could still stay up that late, it’s not like anybody’s stopping you, it’s just not super common.) I didn’t live there, but I had a bunch of friends who did.

The real issue is the elevators, there aren’t a lot of them for having so many floors. You can end up waiting almost 5 minutes at peak times to get down from the 9th floor, for example. Hey just take the stairs if it’s not too hot out, you’ll get some good exercise.

It’s convenient having so many people live nearby and on your floors though, you have a much larger network of people to make friends with. My dorm (Prather) only had 8 or so rooms on my floor, but luckily we all made really good friends with each other. The downside of this is that you will have a lot more people sharing the bathroom. Sure you get more shower stalls and sinks, etc, but it could crowd more easily. Then again we had like 10 guys sharing my bathroom in Prather, with only 2 showers and 3 sinks, and some mornings I would take a shower, shave, etc, without ever seeing another person entire the bathroom the whole time, since people wake up at different times, etc.

You’ll see when you get there, it’s not that bad.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. Honestly, I don’t really want a connecting bath: While being convenient, I will eventually have to clean it. Not that I haven’t ever cleaned a bathroom before, I just think it’s better to not have to deal with possible altercations between the other users when it comes to cleaning.

Another question:

When it comes to Jester, how many people are usually assigned to a bathroom?

Also, are the bathrooms (community) in Jester generally clean? I know there will always be people who **** on the floors and the like, but since I read that they are cleaned regularly, it doesn’t seem like that much of an issue. I could be wrong though.

Jester used to be nice, if you were a student from the Soviet Union - but, they have done a lot to that building, and it is a lot better than years before. They’ve expanded the academic and computer rooms, classrooms, seminar areas, and the language labs. Jester houses the Career Center, the Learning Skills Center, and a big auditorium. And it’s right down the street from the PCL, Dobie Mall and places to eat.

Hi! Does anybody have any more info to cover for ROBERTS hall? I’m going to live there for the summer and I just want to know if anybody thats lived there or walked through there — any advice or knowledge to have about it??? Anything would help to know!

if my roommate paid her deposit back in november and i paid mine in april, do they use the earlier one or the later one to assign us to a dorm?

definitely they use the earlier of the two dates
