The University of Texas Dorms

thank you! so if my roommate paid in october and we’re both in honors programs, are we basically guaranteed the honors dorms?

Yes. Some questions here I am not sure of - but based on the last two years (who got into honors dorms) and what I learned in the housing session at parent orientation (they go by the earlier date for two roommates), I am quite confident you are good for a room in the honors dorms.

I’d say around 12 rooms to a bathroom in Jester. It may be more, but I hardly noticed the other girls. It’s not an amount that you should be worried about… I never had to wait for a shower or bathroom. I didn’t encounter any problems with the bathrooms, and I’d find it surprising if you do when you move in!

if my roommate paid her deposit in october/novemberish do we have any chance at san jac?

How do you check when you paid your housing deposit?

jackdaniels i had paid my housing deposit in november last year and got san jac. i really liked living there and having your own bathroom was SO convienent. and its funny because all my friends that lived in jester and moorehill and duren and stuff always ended up coming to san jac

how strict are the RAs in the honors dorms? i’ve heard most of them are really chill about stuff but some in different dorms are super strict and write you up for anything. does anyone have any experience with this?

most RA’s are lenient. My RA last year actually got kicked out of our dorm because he had 4 drunk girls over and they started vomiting and were having “questionable behavior” in our bathroom (Guys only bathroom)

I have a few questions that I haven’t been able to find answers to. I got supplemental housing in Jester, but I’m assuming that I’ll eventually get permanent housing there too.

1 Due to the fact that most dorm rooms in Jester are very static, is there a place to comfortably put my 32" LCD TV?

2 I keep hearing from a lot of students that living in the dorms is “so expensive,” but when I hear the numbers they quote me for rent at their apartments, it doesn’t sound any cheaper when I also factor in food and utilities. Is there something I’m missing?

3 I want to start working out regularly and eating healthy. Do the cafeterias provide decently healthy food? I don’t want to be a health NUT or anything, I just want a balanced diet that will also help me lose some pounds.

4 I unfortunately started going back to school a little late in life, so I’ll be transferring in to UT as a 23 year old. I chose the dorms over apartments because of convenience and what seemed like the cheapest cost. Will I have to worry about illogical social stigmas being pinned on me, or have most UT students grown past the typical high school mentalities?

Thanks for any answers you can provide

Yes. If you get the rooms with immovable furniture, you can place it in several spots. A popular area is between the desks near the window. I think the 360 degree tour on the UT housing website has a view of that room and you might be able to see what I mean. If you have a one of the rooms with connecting bath and movable furniture, you can put it almost anywhere, on top of a dresser is a popular choice.

Well, think about what you get in a dorm: a small room, shared with another person. For about the same price you can get an apartment with two separate bedrooms, separate private bathrooms, a full kitchen, a living room, maybe a balcony, etc. It comes out to about the same price, and you are getting a “real” place to live, not just a dorm.

YES! This is exactly what I did. In the all you can eat dining halls there are plenty of fruits and vegetables served with every meal. The grill line always has unbreaded chicken breasts to eat (great protein after working out) and another line often has chicken or beef wraps. The gym is really convenient, being at the same intersection. I would go every morning or evening. The recspots facility is also close by, which has a better weight room which is less crowded than the regular gym.

You’ll be fine, nobody will care. When you think about it, many seniors are 22, and many people stay another year, so there are many people of your age around campus. Nobody will care if you are freshman or another year either.

awesome, thank you. I guess I never considered that about #2 because I’m not too picky about my living conditions as long as I have the basics… my only real worry is a roommate who snores because I’m a pretty light sleeper :/

Jeptha, one of my best friends at UT was 28 when I was 18. I liked him because he was so stable and wise! I remember thinking how very old he was. He told me, “You’ll be 28 before you know it!” and of course he was right.

Then when I was 22 and in grad school, I met my future husband. He was an old man - 30!! So you might make MORE friends since you’re older! :)

Hmmm, so I’m wondering if Supplemental housing will be worth it? I like being able to wake up 10 minutes before class and just walk there. Also the libraries and gym too.
It’s either that or an apartment in West campus for me (Orange Tree or Piazza Navona if anyone has any opinions).

Piazza Navona = ballin’ place to live, but hella expensive

ah, thx Maine. i know i’ll meet plenty of great people, I was just worried about feeling alienated by immature perceptions about age differences because I hear the dorms are mostly full of freshmen, and I’ve had more than my fill of trying to deal with inane high school kids. also, I think I saw in another thread that you were an engineering major? what was your specialization?

Xcellerator, i hear you have to have around three roommates to make an apt cost effective, which is what you will have to deal with in supplemental, but in a smaller space. I think what it comes down to is just how picky you are about living conditions, and how much you’re willing to pay. if it helps any though, i’ve heard of people not wanting to leave their supplemental room when a dorm room became available to them. shrug

also, I am interested in becoming an RA, but I was wondering if there are any requirements. All I’ve been able to find is one has to be in good academic standing, but it feels like there should be more to it than that, like you have to be a Jr or Sr. anyone know more about this?

iambored10 - How ballin’ is the Piazza Navona? I took a look at one of their rooms, and it didn’t seem as nice as the pictures lol.

Jeptha - Yeah, I’ll have three other roommates in the apartment. It’s just that you would get more space in an apartment (kitchen, living/dining rooom, private bathrooms, parking spots) rather than in Supplemental. I’m afraid that I’ll have three crappy/bad roommates in Supplemental. Ehhhh. Idk what to do.

iambored10. I loved how you used hella. first hella i’ve seen on this forum… or that i’ve caught… NORCAL! :)

Off topic - another NORCAL peep here! But I don’t usually admit that since I hated the 209 so much, San Diego was home from the minute I moved there and miss it every day.

Jeptha - there are a lot more non-trad students on campus than you’d think, and most people seem pretty accepting. You’d be the first I’d come across to live in the dorms, though. You will definitely find people who are stuck in high school and in a different place in life than where you are, but it’s not hard to weed through some of the bad apples and surround yourself with good ones of all ages, so don’t worry about feeling alienated.

ok what’s better…single room with community bath at prather…or shared room with private bath at San Jac?

btw this is for summer housing

longhornhopeful7:

im starting school next week. originally i was all set up to have my own private room and bath in san jac, but after sitting down and calculating my budget, i realized that if i just reduced it to prather, i’d save like a thousand dollars.

i thought itd be cool to enjoy san jac for the summer – the one dorm that everyone wants; that or duren, whatever – but nah. im going to stay @ roberts and just save my money.

if i had the option of a single room in prather i’d take it though. imo
