The University of Texas Dorms

texas011, my OOS son got his acceptance at the end of February. He put in his $50 housing deposit in October, and did not get his first choice dorm (Whitis).

Thanks Mainelonghorn. Did he get his second choice? or just whatever was left…?

@texas011 – I’m a current out-of-state UT student, and from working with the admissions office as part of the Student Government Out-of-State Students Agency, I can tell you that your housing priority is given only by the date on which you applied. So, you’re no worse off than any in-state student who also applied for housing in early December.

Also, yes, out-of-state acceptances won’t go out until February at the very earliest. I believe the “best-qualified” students will receive acceptance letters in February, and other accepted out-of-state students will receive letters any time from then until the end of March.

texas011, he got his second choice, but it was just Jester, not one of the highly-demanded dorms!

His current roommate’s sleep schedule is very different from his, so he’s going to get a single in Breckenridge next semester.

Does anyone know my chances of getting into San Jacinto if I payed the $50 housing fee on January 2nd? Unfortunately I wasn’t sure I was going to go to UT for a little while so I delayed… Should I have a bit of hope or should I start looking at bikes to dorm at Duren? Or has Jester really gotten better as some have said?

Is the $200 deposit before the $300 housing contract refundable?

Does anyone know how I can get jester east instead of jester west?

You can select Jester East or Jester West as one of your housing choices on the online housing contract. I believe there are fewer of the newer remodeled East rooms, and freshmen have a small chance of getting Jester East from what I’ve heard.

If I can only apply for housing after I get in (in early march maybe), do you think that’s going to be super late? Are most people applying for housing now?

Yeah, you have to wait until after you’ve been accepted. I wouldn’t worry too much though, because jester is really large and most people don’t put it as their first choice. If they have to, the school will provide supplemental housing (study area until a room is available).

I’m also wondering whether to apply now or wait until mid-February to find out if I got accepted since I’m OOS. I really want to get placed in San Jacinto, but is it too late even now to even consider applying there? Should I just apply now and hope I get accepted, or should I wait until February?

@guru: San Jac is pretty expensive. If you can afford that, you might could afford to lose the $50 deposit?

If you are really set on San Jac, go ahead and apply now. However, even if you don’t get into San Jac, let me tell you that none of the dorms on campus are “bad”. Jester seems to get a really bad rap on these forums for some reason.

my parents actually just told me I have to wait until February 15th when decisions come out, because they don’t want to waste $50 if I don’t get in. Would it still be possible to get into San Jac if I apply that late?

also soadquake, which dorm are you in?

It’s possible. February 15 isn’t even that late. I’m in Jester, haha, but I don’t think there’s any bias in my opinion. I moved into Jester believing what everyone said about it (how it’s loud, dirty, and smelly), but it’s actually a nice place. I’m staying here next year as well.

I’m a CAP student currently at UTSA debating on where to live next year (on-campus UT dorm or off-campus apartment). Does anyone know any relatively cheap ($500-600) places off-campus to live? If not, how many sophomores+ live on-campus at UT? I was thinking about living at Kinsolving

^ Seconding both questions. I’m thinking about living in either Duren or Kinsolving next year, but I don’t want to feel out-of-place for being a sophomore.

I want my son to live on campus at least the first 2 years, but probably all 4. I hope there are other parents like me.

I’m going to live on campus next year (my sophomore year). If I had to guess, I’d say about 30-40% of sophomores live on campus, but a lot of them move from Jester to other dorms (like Honors, Duren, San Jac, etc)

My D will be freshman and living at SRD (well, she should be, housing contracts go out next week…and this ole’ Mom will be Fedexing hers back so it should not be an issue) but anyway, even though SRD is private, they have said that it seems to be trending up again for upperclassmen to live on campus. (I consider the private dorms like Dobie, SRD, Hardin House, etc to be “on campus”) Living in an apartment has freedoms, but it sure is nice to pay one price. I am hoping my D lives at least 2 years at SRD and if she rushes, maybe at that point going to the sorority house. I am hoping to avoid apartment 101.
