The University of Texas Dorms

@Borb That’s weird… I sent mine in early November too, and turned in my contract earlier this calendar year. You might try calling DHFS to see what happened… that sucks.

Anybody looking for a roommate for an off-campus apartment still? I got a letter telling me to apply for Castilian, but I doubt I’ll get a space now. Incoming sophomore.

I was just wondering how long of a walk is it to reach the Mccombs school of business if i live in the honors dorms? Also how much do the honors dorms cost if i live with a roomate and have community bath?

Akaleii:
The walk is about 8-10 minutes.
The cost is $8,504. [Division of Housing and Food Service - Prices](<a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining)

My d will be @ Castilian in Fall. We live out of state and had to sign a lease sight unseen. I went to the Castilian yesterday and today. This is what the Castilian website doesn’t tell you:

We love UT, and there were, in general, no problems with her room from what I saw on a tour taken yesterday (however, she does have a private room). Other than carpet being worn, the model room and common areas seemed okay, size of the room okay, furniture okay, residents okay, cafeteria and its workers okay (other than early closing for dinner -6:30 pm posted, but you can get boxed lunch/dinner w/ 24 hr notice).

However, security is another issue- a BIG issue. There is a church around the corner feeding the homeless who then hang around in the (dark) alley alongside the Castilian, on the side street, in front of the Castilian, and perhaps in the parking garage, although to be honest, I didn’t see them in the garage. When I asked the two student staff members about it today (one male, one female), the male bristled and said every place has crime, and my d should learn to be careful; the female said she had had no problems, and she just tried to avoid the vagrants, but she couldn’t say tha tno one else had had problems. She said the Castilian website was trying to promote the property, not tell prospective tenants negatives such as the (truth about the) lack of security. Neither said much about what the Castilian is doing (apparently very little or nothing) to address the security problem other than locking an elevator bank late at night so the student on duty can the see who is going up (as opposed to Austin police who do patrol, not sure how much). The male Castilian rep actually suggested I was wrong to voice concern because the church was doing a charitable service - a valiant thing. My thought: as long as it doesn’t affect female students’ safety! Why is this situated a 1/2 block from a dorm? In my hometown, there are numerous places where churches/charitable organizations feed the homeless. NONE are 1/2 a block from a co-ed dorm!

The two Castilian staff members said they would not tell me my d would be safe because that might make them liable. I told them that given what they clearly already know, and because the Castilian is apparently doing very little to stop vagrants from hanging in the alleys or even on their front steps, waiting for students (apparently, the Castilian has not not closed off alleys or paid for private security on the street- these two actually suggested that private details were not available), the Castilian would, in fact, be liable if a female resident was attacked.

On the other hand, it is only one block from the main “drag,” and during the day, it seems safe enough due to the traffic. Nighttime is another issue.

This is what I suggest: UT has a volunteer program, SureWalk, where, if volunteers are available, they walk you home after 9 pm from the library. Volunteers are not guaranteed, however. Have a charged cell phone in your hand, buy pepper spray and have it in the other hand, a “screamer” alarm on your school bag/backpack, and come back before nightfall if you do not have someone with you. Also buy a yellow “RAP” device for your car to prevent car thefts - but it will not prevent window breaks to get what is in the car. There is also “RAD,” a Rape Aggression Defense class given by UT Police over 4 days, 16 hours in September.

I’m thinking of applying to UT, but I’m also wondering about which dorm to live in if I do get accepted. I’m a girl and I’m not like girly girly or a party girl, I just like to go out occasionally and chill and talk to people. I was wondering what’s the best dorm for someone like me who is a mix of introverted and extroverted? I guess I just want to get a balance of having a good time, but also studying as well.

Jester is always good! Dorms like San Jac and some of the smaller buildings have a reputation of being “too quiet” sometimes.

addictionz04, I’d suggest Kinsolving with the connecting bathroom option!

Do Jester and San Jac have connecting bathrooms as well? I’ve heard that Jester has a lot of parties and I’m not really into loud parties while I try to sleep or study. Also, annematronical do you recommend connecting bathrooms? I always figured I should just use a community bath because it’s hard to clean up a bathroom or whatever and it’s expensive, but I’m willing to spend the money if it’s worth it.

There is no such thing as a “Jester party”. From one year’s worth of experience, I can tell you that parties at Jester are just a really overblown myth. The only thing that happens is that occasionally, people talk a little loudly in the hallways at night – but that’s pretty rare.

I don’t know what floor you lived on soadquake but I definitely saw my fair share of parties. It wasn’t uncommon for people on my floor to take over the study lounge for a video game party or movie night, bringing in chairs from their rooms and rearranging the furniture as they saw fit. My next door neighbor had an average of 4 people in his room at any given time (intermittently breaking into laughter past 3 AM) with this number jumping up to 6-10 on the weekends. I’ve heard of many floor parties too, many of which had alcohol, one of which the RA reported them. While most of these weren’t obscenely out of hand, to say that it only gets a little loud in the hallways is a bit of an understatement in my opinion.

Maybe I got lucky? I don’t know. It probably had something to do with the fact that I lived on a higher floor, where all of the study lounges were supplemental housing (so no room for larger parties).

Am I allowed to bring an iron and ironing board to my dorm room?

Is it difficult to get into Roberts/Brackenridge/Prather? I know they’re very limited in terms of occupancy (like 200 each, right?), but it’s possible people don’t really covet after them, I guess. I sent in my $50 deposit in December; do I even have a chance?

To the future UT students, if you want San Jac or Duren make sure to apply early. I put in my housing deposit in October/November and I got into San Jac.

Hi, I will be a freshman this fall and I learned yesterday that I will be living in Duren. On the “Residence Halls at a Glance” webpage, it mentions that some halls feature bunkable and loftable beds - does anyone know if Duren has either of these? Also, how do you loft a loftable bed?

@erinlees
Here is an instructional video on how to loft your bed
<a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining;

Yes, Duren and San Jacinto and the renovated bedrooms in Jester East have loftable beds

Thank you!

I got assigned to Jester West floor 14th, but I didn’t want to stay that high up so I chose reassignment. How is it between Jester East, Littlefield, Brack/Prath/Rob, and MooreHill? Which should I put as my first option? I’m a freshman btw.

Also, I wonder how come Jester East is said to be the worst.

And I heard that MooreHill and Brack/Prath/Rob has no elevators, is that true? How will we move up to the higher floors then :-S

Thanks for any help.

Can someone please tell me what is the difference between a communal, semi-private and community baths? Thanks!
