The University of Texas Dorms

Thanks!
So, when should I pay for it?
What does the deposit mean? When I pay the deposit, do I have to know which dorm and who my roommate is going to be?

@DHS
Sorry to double post -but I wasn’t sure if you are following the other housing threads.

The $50 is the application fee. Accepting the contract and the $300 deposit ensures a place on campus. You can’t select your dorm and roommate preference until after you return the contract (and pay the deposit).

Preferences are filled in the order of the application (and $50 fee) as long as the contract is returned by the expiration date and selections made by July 1.

This page shows the order of the process: [Housing | Freshmen | Be a Longhorn](Housing & Dining – University of Texas Admissions)

Can someone explain how one applies for a FIG? My son has listed the dorms of his choice but how does he also get involved with a FIG? Also, he might have already found a roommate. How do they coordinate? Does it matter if the roommate has not sent his $50 as early as my son?

turdel, are you talking about the residential FIG? If so, your son needs to put down Whitis as his first choice.

If you are talking about the other type of FIG, where kids take some of their classes with the same group of students and go to a special FIG group once a week, he will find out about that at orientation and sign up for it when he registers for classes.

now it’s clearer. thanks for explaining the difference!

which is the best dorm for a freshman? san jac is too pricey for a private bath, and besides jester, which is the most social dorm? roberts and brackenridge have better dorms but arent they for like upperclassmen mostly? im thinking moore-hill, since there’s a lot of freshman, and its pretty social, since they have like dorm activities and everything.

If you’re a classic Austin lady and you’re a freshman, go for Littlefield. I loved staying there for my freshman year. I wouldn’t have picked another dorm. It’s incredibly homey and there’s lots of traditions/activities (Pajamajamyjam, Lemon Day (alumnus from LTD come to visit), formals (traditionally with Creekside boys but it can be anyone really), Camp Out in the Quad, s’more roasts (in the winter usually), and a bunch of other things). It’s nice and quiet during the day too and always clean and smelling good. Littlefield Cafe is right below and that’s convenient, also the bus stop if you need to get around - I mean walking from that side of campus was never bad because it’s all downhill and close to the drag (walking distance to Kerbey Lane/Starbucks/The Union/SSB).

I knew some freshman who lived in Roberts before, I don’t think it’s mostly upperclassmen; that would probably go for Duren/San Jac and Whitis Court too - apart from their fig program. I mean I lived in Roberts the summer before my freshman year since I started early. It was nice and cozy; good sized rooms and it has a sundeck.

Any dorm could really be social. It just varies really!

thanks! one the housing contract, brackenridge, roberts, and parther are grouped together, so it is just one choice. does that mean i can’t pick which one i want and they will just choose randomly for me?

they will choose randomly for you

…oh well that sucks. i want to be in roberts, but not the other two… thanks for answering!

There should be a specific field on his housing page for roommates. They’ll both need to put each others UT EID in there. In terms of priority, UT will use the earliest date between the two. This also applies to pairs between upperclassmen and freshmen.

I’m going to be a freshman in the fall, and I paid my housing contract fee in December. I have my prefrences in the order San Jacinto, Jester, Moore-Hill. I’m not sure when my prefered roommate paid her housing contract fee, but that aside, is there any chance I’ll get my first housing choice? Any of my top 3 housing choices?

I’m not really sure when the cut-off for San Jacinto normally is but I can tell you that it is pretty much out of the question if you paid in December. Find out when your roommate applied and if its not at least October, I think it would be best to remove it from your list and shift the others up so that you may be able to get a better room in Jester. I’m not completely sure if that will actually help you get a better room you might as well. (Confirmation?)

Hi,
I wanted to know if Honors dorms have private bath facility. And is it possible to choose between the three honors dorms(Andrews, Blanton, Carothers)?

Thanks

Any feedback on The Castillian would be appreciated…

No and no. None of the honors dorms have private baths, and if you’re a freshman your dorm in the honors quad is randomly selected.

I’m also waiting for info on The Castillian.

BTW, any new transfer students, there is a Facebook page UT Austin Transfer Fall 2011 that you should add so you can meet other transfer peeps like myself =D. Just contact “morganem” for the FB link. I highly encourage it

Now seeing that everyone turned in their housing stuff since October, I am now wondering. I don’t mind staying at either Prather, Roberts or Brack but I do not want to stay at my second or third choice [it’s all-female and I chose them because of my roommate]. My roommate turned in her stuff in Dec/Jan and I turned it in around February/March.

@kaylune-- housing will place you according to when your roommate turned in her stuff because she was first. When I first applied for housing as a freshman, I turned mine in mid december, so around the same time your roommate did, and got my 3rd choice that year. Of course, my first two choices were san jac and duren which got filled up fast.

@hbanana-- after you get your housing assignment, if you don’t like it, then dobie is a good place to be. I believe they decide your room/suitemates for you if you don’t put it a preference

So I recieved my housing contract today… for supplemental housing. I sent in my $50 housing app back in early November. Anyone else receive a supplemental housing contract?
