The University of Texas Dorms

So does anyone have any advice??? And to dieotaku, that was a comment I found about Jester's dorm, and from your previous posts I doubt you'd be living there right? I hear all the dorms are friendly though, so I think you should be fine, also, I love your name, does that mean you're an otaku like me?

You may find the following thread helpful:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/624963-campus-housing-timeline.html?highlight=housing%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/624963-campus-housing-timeline.html?highlight=housing</a></p>

For further questions, feel free to email or call the housing dept.

They go through the priority list, first the #1 person, then the #2 person, then the #3 person, and as they get to each person, the put that person in their top choice, or if not possible their second choice, etc. If you and your roommate put each other's UT EIDs on your preferences, the web site will say "your choice of roommate is mutual." When they come to whichever one of you applied first, they give that person what they asked for, and bring along with them the selected roommate.

Housing told the parents that last year at Parent Orientation everyone who wanted a room on campus got one. It is definitely not too late to get a room on campus. Lots of people don't even have their acceptance letters yet.

Thanks so much, but do you by any chance know when they start going through the list? I haven't made my enrollment deposit yet, so I haven't gotten or started a housing contract, and since I'm under 18 I'd have to mail it so it could take a while to get to them.

the deadline to select and update which dorms you want is July 1st, so I assume around then is when they go through the list. I'm too impatient to wait for my contract to go through the mail, so I printed it, fill it out, scanned it back into the computer, and emailed it to them and they got it the next day.

So should I pay my enrollment deposit and get my housing contract done now, or can I do that later??? Everyone says that the day you submit your housing app is what sets your priority so I'm not sure if sending in my housing contract and all that now affects that? Also, I know the $200 is refundable before May 1 and all that it's just that from some new posts I've read UT doesn't seem to offer a whole lot of financial aid. I'm applying for that tx exes scholarship and of course scholarships outside UT, but UT is starting to look really expensive. Also, foxshox made a comment about how he thinks even jester is out of the question at this point and I'd just like to say I think that's true for a lot of people. I went to school and asked about 8 people who I know are going to UT and 2 said they'd already submitted housing app, and the rest were like "huh, already?" Is it just the people I asked or are/were most people this clueless when it came to housing at UT?

Well, last year, UT allowed applicants to apply for housing before they submit their applications, so the housing process has changed from last year till now, which could explain some of the confusion. Also, incoming freshmen are usually more worried about the application process so housing wouldn't be their main concern to put research in.
If you have already sent in your housing application, your priority is set, no matter when you send in your contract. So you don't have to pay the enrollment fee or get the housing contract until you're completely sure that you will be going to UT. Once you get your housing contract, you have 2-3 weeks to fill it out and return it, and since dorm selection ends on July 1st, you have to get your contract sometime before then. After you pay the enrollment deposit, you will get an email with your contract in it. However, after I paid for enrollment, I didn't get the contract for several weeks so manage your time wisely.

I have a specific housing question. I was accepted into Scottish Rite Dorm, so i'm for sure staying there next year (we already paid a nonrefundable $750 fee to reserve my place). Should I withdraw my housing application from UT? Also, what fees that I have already paid am I eligible to get back? I think I paid a $50, a $250 and a $300 but I'm not entirely sure about any of that. haha. My mom paid them. And if I can get any of those deposits back, how do I do it? Any help would be appreciated! :)

I am an incoming freshman attending UT for the Fall 2009. Is anyone familiar with the Residential FIGs program? In addition, any opinion on residing at Whitis?
chill78809

Whitis has a reputation for having particularly nice rooms, and you are right across the street from Kinsolving for easy access to the cafeteria and Kin's Market.

I think a Residential FIG is a great way to quickly and easily be in a somewhat smaller group on campus - like being in the marching band or being in an honors program, it would give you an extra set of friends, and they'd be in a couple of your classes. Being a mom, I don't know anyone who has done it, but I really think this is a great idea. There are going to be 8000 freshmen at UT this fall. Anything you can do to make it UT little bit smaller for yourself sounds good.

Is it safe to wait until after orentation (but before the housing choice deadline July 1) to make my choice? I paid the $50 way back in November

anybody???

I would say it's safe to do so since you already secured your spot on the priority list, but I heard from foxshox that you would not be given the chance to tour the dorms (perhaps only a selected few) during orientation. so I would say to pick your dorms for now just in case, and ask around during orientation and get a wide range of opinions from other students and counselors that will be with you. then when you get back home, you can adjust your dorms.

Hopefully this thread will answer questions about the housing timeline.
Timeline for Housing:
1. Apply for Admission to UT.
2. Apply for housing. ($50) Date you pay is what sets your room assignment priority.
3. Pay your enrollment deposit after you are admitted. ($200)
4. Housing will offer you a housing contract and notify you via email. Accept it on line or if you are under 18 print, sign and mail it.
5. Pay the Advance Payment for housing. ($300)
6. Make your building choices and choose your roommate on line.
7. Send questions to housing@austin.utexas.edu

Once you have been admitted and paid a deposit to say you are indeed coming to UT, you will receive your housing contract. After that you have a limited time, a couple of weeks, to make the advance payment and choose your dorm, so be sure to take care of the contract when you get it.

I suppose you have to let them know by May 1 if you are coming or not, right? That is probably be the last day to pay the enrollment deposit. Once you have paid your enrollment deposit, you need to watch for your contract and be sure to sign it and return it and pay your housing deposit by the deadline time specified on the contract.

If you aren't sure about your dorm choice, you can put in anything and then put your final choice in later. You can keep changing your choice over and over up until the deadline day.

From the UT Housing Web Site:

"When you log in to print and review your contract, you’ll also be able to make your housing choices. If you’re not ready to make them at that time, you may return to My Housing to make your choices or update them at any time up until July 1, when the Division of Housing and Food begins the process of assigning rooms."

Hello everyone,
I will be a freshmen at UT for the Fall 2009 semester and am incredibly excited.
However, i don't know where i want to live.

What is Prather like? i know that it has hard wood floors and ive heard that the rooms are bigger.

I'm also looking into Littlefield, Brackenridge, and Roberts.
can anyone tell me about any of these?
it would be a HUGE help!

On our first visit to UT, we saw a freshman girl's room in Littlefield. It was absolutely tiny. If the beds hadn't been bunked, they would not both have fit side by side on the floor. My daughter and I and the girl we were visiting barely all three fit in there standing, couldn't pass each other around the edge of the room. The dorm was very very very quiet late on a Friday afternoon. Almost "empty" quiet. Littlefield is in a nice location and I have heard that the people who live there love it.

i know that this is a srange and very typical girl question, but did you happen to see in the closet? i've heard that there are rather large and have a dresser inside. i've also heard that they serve as a dressing room.?
thank you so much for your help

aschap91, enjoy living at SRD! I lived there for all 4 years of college. I loved it. I had a sunroom on the first floor hall closest to the front door. I loved hanging out next to the swimming pool and getting to know so many friendly girls. Now that I'm looking at dorm rooms as my son visits colleges, I can appreciate the nice sizes of SRD's rooms!

My son would love to go to Texas, but he's a distance runner and may not be fast enough to make the team. Kind of a bummer!
