The Update

Hahaha...this is such a funny post. It is really easy to bash actually. There is no way that your math score could have dropped that far, and if it did it should tell you something: youre a good guesser, which is evident in your new score. You say that is your sophomore SAT score...well you are a sophomore, so no excuses! Baylor is the only school I see you truthfully getting into. You're gonna kill yourself in all your APs...don't do it...

Baylor you can get in if you can fill out the application. It is too soon to tell about Rice and Vandy. Junior year grades are key, and I know you are a good student, but lots of things can happen. There is the occasional terrible teacher, you can get sick, you can land the girlfriend-from-hell....... I would suggest doing some good SAT prep next winter and taking SAT again in March or May. Plus, you will have your junior PSAT score. You will get more solid advice at that point. As I said, I think Rice would be good for you, but it's too soon to tell how your stats will be. Also, I still don't see the essence of who you are in your ECs. What is your true passion? Figure that out and then let it show.

My true passion is music and I listed that. I have several offers from people wanting me to give their kids music lessons, and I think I'll take those this summer.

Interesting you mention those "things that could happen."

9th grade- I had a lovely girlfriend who quickly turned to the girlfriend from hell.

10th grade- got massively sick. Had more than one terrible teacher.

Oh, and to Pentasa from the last page.

We took a practice SAT in math class, a released one from a couple years ago, and I got a 1510 yes, 760V/750M. Too bad that wasn't an official administration of the SAT.

i took the practice SAT and got a 58000

Things to do to increase your chances

-Take the SAT's again and do better (like 2000-2100ish)
-Live in California for a year before applying (easier said than done, of course lol)
-Keep up the rest, and don't mention commercial awards

and for Baylor: Fill out the application completely.

Hi mathwhiz! I took PSAT, too. I got 1900 with out very good preparation. I am taking classes now and my vocabulary surely has expanded in a year. Heheh.

I'm guessing you're in my 07 class! I was looking into Baylor and it seems to me that you could get into it. I was planning on making Baylor my 'safety' if it wasn't less than an hour away from my home. :x Anyway, if I can feel confident about Baylor, you should, too. The other ones are looking like a reach. Not sure about Rice, but get good grades and stuff.

What HS do you go to by the way?

Yo no offence, but I got a 219 PSAT sophomore year, and I had a friend who got a 234 soph year...a 167 isn't really good...at all. If you broke 2100 I'd be surprised.

Honestly...sophmore PSAT means NOTHING! It's pretty sad when you have to be defined by a number in your life. Does it make you feel better about yourself by saying ur PSAT's in Sophmore year are better than someone else's, and I guess you must feel extra-special because a friend of yours did even better. He has all summer and all next year to bring up his SAT's...
I got a freaking 178...JUNIOR YEAR...what are you going to do lynch me? My score wasn't as good as most people's hear but I am confident I will get a 2000+ SAT and be in the 2010 Wake Forest class.

Why such confidence?

And the kids bragging, I'm showing him reality. It's been pointed out, the kid only accepts positives, not negatives.

hello people, i've commented on a bunch of threads and i just wanted to see my name again...

Pointless...yes
Anyway, I happen to like guster a lot...

Wow, a lot of replies, and arguing over me.

Thank you to those who have offered constructive criticism or even praise, and no thank you to those who have offered their wonderful PSAT scores and scorn towards me.

NJPitcher, I'm not bragging, these statistics are in no way fabulous, I just wanted some advice.

I took the SAT with no prep and the highest official math I had taken at the time was algebra 1...and I scored a 780.

so that's what you're looking for? praises? okay...

WOW! your stats look amazing! lets not talk about Rice... that's a puny little school for YOUR intelligence... why not apply to Harvard or Princeton? Those are probably safeties for you. Heck, you probably don't even have to apply! They'll recruit you right away since you are sooooooo amazing... I am SO jealous! Keep up all the amazing things you do. I can't imagine what the world will be like without you.

this is funny.

Don't you guys agree? This kid is BOUND to be incredible. ANY university would be a HUGE fool for even giving him a second thought.

Yes let's leave out the constructive criticism part and talk about how I said "praise." Apparently you haven't learned how to take quotes for the correct meaning, though you seem to think you are extremely intelligeny albeit this is a basic English skill.

well.. i DID consider the SAT stuff to be sort of constructive, but apparantly you didn't think so...

Some of it was but you put it in a quite obnoxious way, and have stated previously in this thread that you are trying to bother me.

Due to this statement all your points about your "good" intentions are very much moot.

um, I'm sorry Texasmathwiz, not everyone in life will talk to you in a "nice" way... sometimes they might say bad things nicely... you just gotta figure out what's nice and what's not beyond the tone and diction of what a person says.... i am SOOOOOO incrediblly sorry that you cannot take people critizising your SAT/PSAT scores... HAHA,

who here on this thread agrees just for that, this kid deserves nothing more than Bayor. One of the biggest thing in life is to handle critizisms regardless of how they sound... cuz u know what, not everyone is gonna word their remarks nicely or give you praises all the time... u think your college professor is gonna do that? u think they'll always praise you and tell you u did somthing wrong "kindly"???? or hypothetically they might just wordlessly give you back a D.
