The waiting for scholarship and honors is killing us

Oh how I wish we would hear on scholarships and honors program. Daughter accepted at end of November and the wait is awful :frowning:

I am sure she will get something soon! It took my son about 1 month to hear about his.

Hopefully you will hear something soon, and you can finally relax and enjoy being a Buckeye Mom.

Based on another post here, I called on behalf of my son and was told that he met the criteria for scholarships, but they did not tell me anything. The next day his offer came in the mail, dated Jan 21, following his mid-December acceptance and late October application. I was told that they were still handing out awards, and that scholars/honors will still going out into March. Good luck!

I agree with the OP…knowing my D was accepted, but not knowing the scholarships situation is torture.

I wish they would have come at the same time!

She was accepted at 5 schools, OSU is the only one that doesnt’ give financial info to help make your decision. We made the decision she is going to OSU regardless . Even though she could have gone to another state school for almost free…

Momtoandv

We were in the same boat, my daughter could have gone to another state school for almost free, and we still went with OSU. (She did get a scholarship from OSU.) She loves loves loves OSU and could not be happier.

My son got the scholarship as well and got into 5 other schools also. It is a toss up between Chapel Hill (In state for us) and Ohio. We loved OSU so much but hard to pass up Chapel Hill for instate tuition. So confusing

College67, I think Chapel Hill is cheaper tuition and higher ranking, and closer to home for you?
What draws you to OSU??

@OSUmom2018 When we visited OSU this past summer, we fell in love with OSU and the Columbus area. From the college tour and campus as well as High Street (He thought that was a great college town, also the great farmers market). My son was so excited to get in there (He did get $15,000 in money from them) but then he got his Chapel Hill Acceptance which is amazing as well. His major is Political Science. The one downside to OSU is that’s its about 8 hrs to get there from Charlotte (well longer when we visited as we got lost and ended up in Kentucky  Chapel Hill is 2 hrs away from us (much better). He is 99% sure he is going to Chapel Hill. He said he might go to OSU for graduate school.

Such hard choices, but I understand your thought process and decision making. Being closer to home was important to me, my daughter was only 17 when she entered Ohio State, and the campus is just an hour and a half away from home. And yes, a visit to OSU, taking the tour, attending the various information sessions, is amazing. My daughter fell in love with everything!

Good luck to you and your son, I am sure he will be happy with his choice, the planets are are lining up for Chapel Hill. But hope he makes to OSU for grad school!

@OSUmom2018, Thanks! Its funny, same thing with my son as he does not turn 18 until the end of August so he is on the younger end also. Its so hard in letting go. He is my first child so going off is hard. By the time my daughter goes in 2 years at least I will know what to expect. We sure do love some OSU Football!!

College67, yes indeed, was a hard transition for me, my daughter is my one and only. And many of the freshman are a year or two older than she is, so I was concerned about how she would fit it.

Yes it was a learning curve in terms of the college admission process, if I had another younger child, it would be a much easier process when it was time to do it again.

The transition has been much easier because Ohio State is parent friendly. We got a lot of communication from them once my D had made her decision to attend, and while she has been a freshman, we are on the OSU Parent and Family Email List, weekly or more often newsletter, etc… They have parent weekends and parent activities. It is a lot of fun and helps us feel connected with our daughter. For example, a couple of weeks ago it was OSU COSI night (large science museum in Columbus), the museum shut down and only OSU staff, students and parents attended for free. Free shuttle buses, etc. OSU always does everything first class.

They strike a good balance in helping the parents let go, encourage independence in the students, but making us feel connected. They have an award winning Freshman Year Experience Program.

You got that right on the football! The entire state of Ohio went nuts this season with pure excitement and delight. I speak with only slight hyperbole. What a season. What a year for my daughter to be a freshman at OSU. The kids celebrated most of the night, singing Carmen by Mirror Lake.

Even if your son goes to CH, I sure hope you continue to watch OSU football and cheer on the Bucks!

Go Bucks!
O-H-I-O

@college67 , That’s funny that you said you’ll know what to expect when your daughter goes off to college. I have 2 daughters. My 1st daughter is a junior at OSU now. My second daughter is a senior in high school. With my first, it was a learning experience. With my second, we knew what we needed to do and when we needed to do it to get her into her college choices.

She applied to 5 colleges and has been accepted to all but one (U of Michigan. They deferred her but no loss for us as we are OSU fans anyway!!) So, now her toss up is between OSU and Purdue. We have both college tours scheduled for next week. Purdue is OOS for us, so unless they come up with a scholarship for her, she will be attending OSU. I hate this waiting part too!! Good luck to you and your son. I am sure he will make the right choice.

PS, the letting go part is the worst! I didn’t even have my hand off the outside of my daughter’s dorm room door before I burst into tears!

@momtoaandv, I am getting a bit antsy on the scholarship waiting too. My daughter is waiting on both Purdue and OSU. They have both increased their snail mail correspondences with us so hoping we hear something soon! My daughter was accepted in November as well.

@MomofSprinter, I am sure I will be crying also! When my son got his driver’s license that night he wanted to drive to his friends house and when he was pulling out of the driveway I started crying like a baby! My daughter made a video of my foolishness. My husband couldn’t understand why I was crying…It was because he was growing up so fast, so I could just imagine when I drop him off to college and when we get ready to leave I might have a little mental breakdown  Haha!!

Your daughter has a tough choice in choosing OSU or Purdue as they are both great schools! I am sure she will get some scholarship money coming her way.

Looks like I will be calling on Monday, they didn’t even give her the minimum she was entitled too. Letter came today

@Momtoaandv, I wonder why she did not get the full amount? What was she supposed to receive?

@Momtoaandv, my daughter received a letter today as well. A small amount but any amount helps. I’m wondering if there are still others. Hoping anyway.

@college67, I will be an empty nester come August so I am sure there will be lots of crying in this house. While this whole college thing is exciting, it is also sad at the same time. Hoping no one video tapes me though. lol!

She qualified for at least the 2,000. She had a ACT 0f 28, GPA of 4.1 and 3 in her class of about 150.
