Things to do at LA besides studying

yea...that. fanny pack...I think. haha

fanny packs are worn by only the coolest of people :)

What's so disgusting about star-gazing? And why do people knock LA like it's a city full of lepers?

That's such a small portion of 'LA' but people who've never lived outside the Hollywood/BH area will never understand LA. I say it's ignorance rather than trying to look smart.

I would rather live here, which I have for the last ten years, than to move in some non-pretentious town.

Well, enough of my homer-ness. Let's see, I've seen Drew Barrymore @ Fred 62s (sat two seats away - no I did not lose my cool); Alexis Bledel (Gilmore daughter, also @ Fred 62s); and Katherine Heigl (is that how you spell it - from Grey's Anatomy, also @ Fred 62s). Last but not least, the star from the show Cold Case @ a Starbucks in Silver Lake; the blonde chick. She is hot in person, and quite a body.

ive seen phil jackson/mitch kupchack/jeanie buss at a korean cuisine, and other celebrities other times....they are just people living out their lives in the world.

I think what someone else was trying to get at when they made a comment about star-gazing what that it's not cool to practically maul the star when you see him/her. I mean, it's definitely cool to see actors and actresses around town but it's a little tacky to run up to them and beg for autographs and pictures when they're just out trying to do some shopping or eat a meal. Just like Jason said, they're just people living out their lives.

That being said, my roommate and I actually saw Pierce Brosnan and his family on third street spring quarter! Though, of course we didn't maul him - he was with his kids for goodness sake! Lol.

Last year I saw Morgan Freeman on campus. I also saw Samuel L. Jackson twice eating at In and Out. Right before the USC game Troy Aikman was on campus, and finally for the big conclusion I once saw Tom from Myspace. And that was all on campus. I mauled none of them, but had a strange sack Troy Aikman just so I could say I sacked an NFL QB. I also was able to logically conclude that Samuel L. Jackson really liked his double-double...

P.S. I know this sounds bad, but I've always liked Tommies better than Tommy's.

Yeah there's nothing wrong with star gazing. It's fun! It's just not cool to hyperventilate and scream and act as if it's actually a big deal, because then you look stupid. You're supposed to care without looking like you care. It's all about being casual.

Allena- Blasphemy!

wait..ive never really looked at the sign..

but is tommy's the one with the chili stuff or is tommies the one?
whats the diff?

All of the Tommy's/Tommie's/Tomy's/Whatever places claim to have the best chili burgers.

Original Tommy's is (obviously) the original. It's the least sketchy and, in my opinion, by far the best.

The rest always seem to be pretty dirty and I just don't think that they can compare. They just take advantage of the Original Tommy's reputation and sell a sub-par product.

I used to live in the Rampart area, and that's where the first Tommy's was opened. They have the best Chili of all the Tom___ around town. This place almost always has a line, and no matter how seedy the place is, people flock this place just so they can say they went to the original Tommy's.

Tommy's and Tommies are very much related. As far as I understand it, Tommy's is the orignal place which was opened by a husband and wife. As it often happenes things went sour and they divorced. The husband got the resturaunt and the wife being bitter decided to open Tommies.

...and their daughter opened Tammy's :)

hahah thanks for the clarification

LA has tons of clubs...although if you're over 18/under 21, the options are more limited. I think one of the closest clubs is Century Club in Century City (18+).

And I'm sure you'll see some celebs during your 4 years in LA...I've met Jeff Goldblum last year...Also @ the LA Times Book Festival (Julie Andrews, Sean Austin...) and there's tons of concerts on campus where you could see (or even meet your favorite band/artists if you're on the committee that's putting it on: Student Committee for the Arts or even Campus Events: Talib Kweli, Saul Williams, Phantom Planet...etc.)

And if you haven't tried it, rollerblading next to the beach is always fun :)

There is:

Little Tokyo, the Getty Museum, Norton Simon Museum, MOCA, the Wax Museum, Santa Monica Pier, 3rd street promenade at Santa Monica, Venice Beach(cheap deals), Beverly Center, Rodeo Drive, MELROSE! LA Zoo, Universal's Studios.
Some of the best beaches are Hermosa Beach, Zuma..
Oh and there's this awesome awesome thrift store by Melrose and La Brea, it's next to the world famous Pink's hotdogs, it's called Jet Rag. The thrift store is highly organized, they may cost a tad bit more than the salvation army but they have awesome clothes. Some vintage too. And on sundays they have their one dollar sale!
There's also Olvera street(Mexican food etc), China Town, Thai Town, Little Ethiopia.

There's a ton of clubs too in LA and hollywood. I usually go to Club Moscow in Hollywood, it's an 18+ club. I'd say it's a pretty trendy setting, bands usually play there, it's super close to Hollywood and Highland, Mann's Theatre and such. It used to be 5 bucks to get in but they jacked up their prices to 10 dollars. There's a bunchof others too in Hollywood you got to check up.

There are tons of bands playing around LA too, the knitting factory, key club, the whiskey, hollywood bowl, glass house pomona, so many bands come here every here to play! My personal favorite is the troubadour, so many big bands use to play here, before they got big of course, and it's a pretty small, intimate setting too.

What's more, if you're interested in modelling, there are tons of agencies here! From Ford to Elite. But of course New York City has the bigger deal.

There are some pretty sweet and cheap deals in East Los Angeles too at the Lincoln Heights district, it may seem kinda ghetto there but you get the freakin best deals for food, furniture, clothing and etc. You'll never seen anything so cheap over here, if you are trying to limit your budget.

Dude there's so much variety in foods here too. From french, Morrocan(crazy Arabic dining experience), Mexican, Ethiopian, you name it.

If you want to go hiking there's Gryffith park, they have tons of different trails there. And there's also the Santa Anita Mountains..

There's probably a lot more I just can't list here. But yeah, LA basically rules! Feel free to IM if you have any questions!

where are places to shop that sell cheappp stuff (like nordstroms rack, ross, etc)....cause im in desperate need of shoes. haha

They just put a DSW in the old Circuit City building on Gayley.

I don't know if this helps you or not.

I'm not really sure where Santa Anita Mountains are..but I'm pretty sure you're referring to the Santa Monica Mountains. :)

Heh or San Gabriel :)
