Thinking of transfering

I spent a year at George Washington University and it really wasn't my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong, the social life was outstanding - I made many friends, was never bored over the weekends etc. Unfortunately, the city really got to me and second semester I was sick for a good 2-3 months. On top of that, I had a job and an internship so my grades dropped very dramatically. I went from a 3.2 GPA first semester to a 2.1. Problem is, I want to transfer because I will probably be switching to a Business-Finance major (GW's business school is really not that amazing). So with a terrible GPA like mine (2.8 overall), is there any chance of transferring out to a good school (preferably one with a notable business school)? Or should I drop my job and internship and really work hard and get a 3.8-4.0 Fall semester and apply in the spring? Do universities ever look at the reasons for transfers? Because, other than my internships (I had two this Summer and one over the course of Freshman year) and OKAY first semester, I don't really have much to show for myself...

Also, if I apply in the Spring, can I apply for Fall semester 2013?

It’s okay. I currently go to a school where the average GPA is 2.2… which is why I’m trying to transfer the f*** out of there…

From my understanding, business schools are very competitive so with a 2.8, it will be difficult. However, it’s not unheard of for a person with a mediocre GPA to be accepted into a great school.

I would suggest dropping the job (maybe the internship, unless it’s required for graduation) because right now, getting a higher GPA is more important than money… unless you need to support yourself…

I am also a finance major. Unfortunately I do not think your GPA puts you in a great position to transfer to a target recruiting school. On the other hand, GWU is still a semi target. What I would do is stay there especially if you are enjoying it and work your a** off for the rest of your time to raise your GPA. You’ll get where you want to go.

You know, I’m enjoying it, but I also really wanted a school with a lot of spirit, something along the lines of most of the big Midwestern public schools, ala UMich, UWisc etc. I was admitted to UWisc but did not get in and I was waitlisted by UMich because my high school lost my 9th grade transcript so by the time UMich could process my documents, there was literally no space left. Would I have any chance of transferring into UMich, considering my background with them?
