Bahaha, because nobody else on CC would say this.

I am so glad I found this website even though it makes me feel depressed as well. At my school, people join like, 2 clubs (which they never attend meetings for anyways) and all they really do is study to get straight A's and think they're ready to get into Harvard. I falsely fell into that delusion as well. But finding this website taught me the extent to which you really need to develop yourself for colleges.. it's not just about getting straight A's.

I dunno, you may say I'm crazy, but reading through the acceptance threads and stuff on this website actually made me feel better about myself....

if this website makes you cry you should see art of problem solving

<-- is too intimidated to post there, because anything I can actually solve has already been solved by people much smarter than me...

Oh my goodness. You're smart. We're smart. You may or may not get into more prestigious colleges than the people on these boards. Now here's a gold star.

^true, I stopped looking at that site after a while....way too intimidating. CC makes me feel slightly better. For example a thread about a 6th grader trying to secure his qualification for the USAMO in 6th grade. Scary!

Lol! What about that 4th grade Canadian who made USAMO?
Yeah, that definitely tops O Dorney...

^Are you talking about Alex Song? Yeah wow...Except O'Dorney made IMO ...but Alex Song is from Canada...

These people make feel like I'm so bad at math :(

Yeah, really.

I feel like I am a math failure and don't even deserve to be used as a basic slow calculator.
:(

yeah I'm talking about alex
lol, I've known O Dorney personally since 7th grade or so, and he's an exceptional proof writer, but I think that Alex will probably be better than Evan when he's Evan's age...

Oh so you know him personally...

I know two math geniuses but they honestly don't have the drive to go that far. They're one of those okay I'll take the AMC to see how I'll do and end up making USAMO....bah I wish I could be more like them. But I know atleast one of them worked really hard ever since he was like 6...But I guess mathematical ability really comes down to how much you practice and how hard you decide hard to work to improve your skills from an extremely young age. Probably why that Alex guy will end up being better than Evan....

Hm, I always thought math was pure talent and brain...

It is; but to develop it, you've got to practice. Talent/ability/intelligence is a necessary but insufficient condition to becoming a great mathematician.

I actually disagree; You don't necessarily need talent/ability/intelligence to develop superior math skills.

Perhaps this exception is due to young age but back when I was in 2nd grade I was stupid, like the in the stupid group in every subject. I couldn't add anything beyond 2-digit numbers which is pretty sad. Then my parents started freaking out about how stupid I was so they started making me do these obscure word problems way beyond my mental capability that involved algebra. The they tried to instill fear in to me so I would magically get the answer. Never worked and caused me to despise math. But eventually i started "getting" it....
So then they made me take this gifted math exam that only the top 3% or so passed and I some how got accepted. Now I actually sort of like math and appreciate after I studied it myself....

But anyways my point is you don't necessarily need "talent" to be good at math you just need to practice a lot and work really hard. That's basically why most Asians are so good at math.....

I don't know if this website makes me cry, I think it just motivate me to be prepared for college and be aware of the top kids that I am competing with.

Um, okay. The fact is that some people just don't get math, no matter how hard the practice/coach or w/e. I think that if you're "good", like meadow (the guy from NJ...LOL), you have some talent, you just wasn't using it or something.

Practice helps. But to get pretty far, um, you need talent...

And besides wow what's this math discussion all of a sudden? Who turned this into one of those I'm so USA Math pro things?

Their culture/genetics is more predisposed to math, I'd say...

Uh I sooo do not agree with this.
Srsly, as a private MATH tutor, I see people all the time - some of them understand math, some of them don't. The people who understand it do NOT need to practice - those who don't obviously can bring up their ability to the point where they can DO what is required for the assessment/test/whatever, but they usually only barely grasp the material and don't "understand" what they're doing. After a lot of work, I've been able to get every person that I tutor to really understand what they're doing with the math work, so that they get how to do everything and can ace their tests or whatever - BUT what you're saying is that for those that have pure talent and math ability, you HAVE to practice to be good at it - ummmm not true. All 4 years I've been in HS, I've had the highest grade for whatever math course I'm in, yet I never practice?, and I got a 800 M on the SAT, but never practiced, never prepared, etc. Soooooo am I an outlier? No, I know tons of people who are just like me and you really do NOT need to practice to hone math skills.

Oh LoL wow..

LOL invoyable i hate you, seriously.... lol. It's not my fault my students are foolish enough to pay 40 bucks an hour to get tutored by a high school student, but it is my fault that I am foolish enough to take a mere 15 of those dollars from my boss as a paycheck. ;[

INVENIAMVIAM, you're so cool. What math class are you taking though?
You have a boss, so does that mean you belong to some kind of private math tutors club/organization/whatever?
