Thornton transfer chance with an F??

Hi. I was a community college student who transferred to UCLA as a poli sci major, withdrew for financial reasons, and am now preparing to apply to transfer into the popular music program.

I am accomplished academically. I completed the honors program at my community college, received awards for my department, have done research conferences, etc and I have never failed a class in my life.

However, I got hit hard with health issues at UCLA and failed a class with the full intention of retaking it later. Later I had to withdraw for financial reasons so retaking it is no longer an option.

I am worried about this F, and if it will automatically disqualify me. I have been a good student all my life and I hope I can explain why I got the F on my application. Most of my other classes are As with some Bs, so the F was a one-off thing.

Am I doomed? Will a good screening video/audition offset it somewhat? I am reading conflicting things on this board about whether or not you must be accepted into the university first or if they take a more holistic approach…

Thank you for your help.

I also asked a question here about academic criteria for Thornton and got a recommendation to just give admissions a call. I did and, sure enough, they were very straightforward in providing answers. For freshman admissions, Thornton doesn’t have minimum academic criteria (e.g. grades, test scores.) While you need to go through both admissions processes, one for USC and the other for Thornton specifically, I was told that USC would not decline any applicant accepted by Thornton on the basis of grades or test scores. I don’t know if this also applies to transfers but I would encourage you to call them directly and ask. I think it would just be a relief to know for sure, one way or the other.
