i finally worked out my schedule to have 4 courses and a seminar, but i realized that three of those courses are all on the same day. economics from 11:30-2:30, English 31AC from 11-10, and English 45B from 7Pm-10pm. i'm an entering freshman and this looks like it will be wayyy too much stress. since almost everything else i can take is full at this point, should i just drop a class and have 3 courses and a seminar? or take a decal instead?

That is not a desirable situation. Might be a good idea here to go with the recommendation for taking a minimum load your first semester - 13 units - which could involve seminars and/or DeCals to get up to 13.

I personally find your situation very unenviable. Most of the study groups only convene near the exam date, and you will likely be inundated. I would advise you to choose other classes.

I’m in the same situation. The biggest challenge my advisor said was how it makes it hard for me to be able to focus on just one subject. However (and I may eat my words later) from all the other advice I’ve been given it appears that my classes are fairly easy and fact based, with the exception of my math class that i’ll just have to work at.

In my experience, I have never had an easy class at Berkeley. Every class that is easy is relative to much harder ones. Having several finals on the same day is a recipe for a bad start- something that nobody wants.

Two finals on one day is not ideal, but something that happens to most people occasionally. No reason to drop the class because of that. Three on the same day is too much, but not two. not great, as your final review has to happen between exams when you are already a bit worn out, but bearable.

Are teachers ever flexible about when you can take the exam? I thought i finally had a perfect schedule, until i checked and my math, espm, and chem finals are in a row.

I have Thursday (3-6p), Friday (8-11a), and Friday (7-10p). I figure there is time to study between each one of these on top of the studying I will do beforehand.

Having more than one final on a day is pretty typical. Last semester I also had three in one day: chem (8-11am), bio (11:30-2:30pm), classics (7-10pm). I had a solid grade in chem, so I left early to study for bio. 3 finals in one day is tiring but manageable as long as you don’t have 2+ hard classes on the same day. If that’s the case, and the classes are unavoidable, then I would suggest consistently studying for at least one of the classes. Don’t forget that there’s 1 week of review (no formal classes) just before finals.
